So my boss decided to upgrade his DirecTV equipment. He had been using an old D12 receiver, with a round dish (18 x 20), and was only getting SD video.

When he called to upgrade, the rep told him they'd send him an HR54 (with DVR) and that it would work with his old dish. I had told him before that I thought he'd need a new dish, but when he called the rep seemed pretty adamant that this HR54 would work with his current dish.

He got the receiver today and I tried to help him install it. When I got to the setup screen it said "Cannot detect SWM" which really wasn't surprising to me. Because the setup he's got now doesn't have a SWM.

He chatted with DirecTV support and they are sending a tech out next week to install a new dish. But even in that chat, the rep was sure that the HR54 would work with his current dish.

It's all kind of moot since they are sending out a tech to replace the dish next week. But I'm just curious, will the HR54 work without a SWM? Will it work on the old round 18 x 20 3 LNB dishes? I don't think it will, but DirecTV reps seem to think it will and they SHOULD know more than I do.

The 54 must have SWM. I don't think it will work with that dish. It will work with the Slimline dish which is what they will change it to.

The HR54 requires a swm setup. It can be with a swm lnb or a swm switch.

Spot on. I have a non-swm legacy LNB but a swm16 switch (or two) for my HR54.

The rep probably doesn’t realize there was an oval dish that isn’t the slimline dish and therefore thought it was a slimline.

An HR54 will work with an 18 x 20 legacy dish if it's run through a swm switch.

I did read the question. "Will it work on the old round 18 x 20 3 lnb dishes". The correct answer, that I already gave, is yes it will work if it's run through a swm switch.

I tried to talk them into an HR54 this week to replace my bad HR24 and it was a no go. Figures they would send one to someone that can't even use it :D

Thanks, I did not know that. This would then only get SD channels. ??

The correct answer to the questions would be "nope, yes" not "nope, nope".

Humans have lived on the moon. Our race has not attempted to do so for more than a few days, but it is possible.

Of course we can. We've had the technology for decades. Just haven't used it for quite some time.

At the moment I do not. But that technology is available if I should have a need for it.
