HS-17 - Recommendation on C41s or C61Ks?

I have an HS-17 installation scheduled for next week with 4 Genie minis. This is a free upgrade. I currently do not have any 4K TVs but plan to in the future (at least 1 this year). My order currently includes 4 C41s. I am wondering if I should switch at least 1 (maybe all 4) to C61Ks. My only concern is that I have read many complaints of stuttering with the C61Ks and it seems to date back quite a while. Who knows when D* will resolve that issue (doesn't seem to be a priority). I won't get another free upgrade for 2 years and I don't want to have to pay $99 or whatever the cost is at the time to move from a C41 to C61K. Any recommendations on what I should ask for with the 4 minis? Thank you for the help.

If the TV you're planning on purchasing is DIRECTV 4K Ready you can use it as a client. If not you'll have to go with a C61K-700 in order to get 4K service.

Can you get an HS17 without having at least 1 4k TV ?

I would prefer the Genie clients instead of RVU. I'm just trying to decide the combination of the 4 clients (C41 or C61K) I should ask for with the installation next week. I'm thinking 1 C61K and 3 C41s but I'm interested in what others think. I would prefer to get 4 C61Ks but it seems as if they are not as stable as the C41s from what I have read in various posts.

I've been using a C61K-700 for a little over a year. It's performance has been stable but I am afflicted with the infamous audio drop out issue many others have reported.

Depending on the tv, the built in RVU May be excellent. My mom has a tv and I set it up with RVU (it’s a 4K too) and I do not get calls from her and I’ve seen it work plenty and it’s every bit as fast as my c41 clients on my own system. If not faster. I truly believe it depends on the tv you have. The higher end the tv the more horsepower it has the better it works I have a feeling...

Now you have to tell us about the TV. Make and model would be what we need.

I had and HR54 install in the spring and they would not put C61Ks on the non-4K TVs, so they only installed one. No idea if that was a local policy or if anything has changed. I did order a C61K when I ordered my HS17 for self-install last week and it works fine as you probably know on a non-4K TV.

I too have had no C61K issues on my HR54 that other people have referred to here, but I just switched to the HS17 so not enough time to have a verdict yet.

That's good to hear. Perhaps I will go with 4 C61Ks to future proof. There do not seem to be any restrictions as to how many C61Ks they will give you with the HS-17. Just the limitation of 2 simultaneous 4K feeds.

One good thing about the C61K is that they allow the recorded 4k channels to be played at 1080P on a non 4k set. The C41s will not allow playback of a 4k channel.

Yes and it looks really good. I keep telling myself as good as 4K, but I think that is my brain trying to justify not buying a new 4K set that my heart wants.

I have 3 C61Ks and have not experienced the famous stuttering problem. Perhaps it varies with the vintage of the C61K hardware?

The have never had more than one model from one manufacture, so if it is, it’d would have been an inline change.

I still think it’s a hdmi talking problem with certain versions of hdmi in tvs.

Last year someone tried to collect data on the C61K audio dropouts. Normally they happen on 1080i channels, not the 4K channels. And people going through AVRs from C61K's have reported no audio dropouts but those with direct HDMI-TV connection have reported them.

This is about a year old as I recall and things may be different now.

Just got the Hs 17 Friday and upgraded 2 rvu tvs to the c61k. They are much much better pq than rvu on a 2014 Samsung 4k TV. Also looks great on my living room ks8000 Samsung. I say get as many c61k as you can.

I wasn't aware of that, good information. May have to get another C61 and get rid of a C41. Thanks for posting that.

Interesting on the KS8000 (which i also have) - was it originally RVU? I'm RVU on mine, and have been thinking of going to a client for ease of remote (the smarthub RVU input is a pain on the Harmony)

No, KS8000 was never on RVU, was on the HR44. Maybe it would be better than the older Sammys I have with RVU. I also have not great internet through DSL modem/wifi router combo, so that could have been slowing things down?
