I am sorry to report that my wife made me cancel my DirecTV subscription.

I can't say I blame her, I can't remember the last time we watched DirecTV.

I would have rather canceled Dish Network and stayed with DirecTV but my problem is I have 4 Dish Network receivers (including 1 HDTV model 6000) I only had 1 DirecTV receiver. It would have cost me a lot of money to switch everything to DirecTV.

Calling DirecTV was an interesting experience, when I called I got a message saying something to the effect of "Thank you for calling DirecTV, our records indicate that your account has a balance of $11.27, press 1 to pay this balance now or press any other key for the main menu."

I pressed the key for the main menu then selected the option to speak to a "Home Entertainment Specialist" (Which I hoped was customer service) A voice answered the phone and the lady at the other end of the phone asked how she could help me. I told her I wanted to cancel my service.

She asked me why, and I told her the honest reason, she then offered me 3 months of their top package for free if I stayed as a customer. I told her no thanks then she told me to hold on she was going to send my call to a customer retention specialist to complete my transaction. But before she transfered me she reminded me I owed 11.27 on my account, I told her to charge my credit card on file, she then asked for the last 4 digets of that credit card and she processed it.

My call was transfered and another woman answered the phone and asked "Is this Scott?"

    I answered "Yes"

She said "Scott is there anything we can do to keep you a DirecTV subscriber? It shows here that you have been a long time customer."

    I told her "unfortunately no"

She then said "Perhaps we can get you to stay with a equipment upgrade or maybe some free programming?"

I still said no, she then offered me 6 months of Showtime free just to keep my receiver hooked up. I still declined. I did thank her for her offer.

She asked me why I was leaving and again I told her, then I added "Besides when the merger goes through I will be a DirecTV Customer again"

She laughed and then said that they have been told "not" to expect the merger to go through, but they are remaining hopefull. I told her I did not have anything against DirecTV but I could not afford to switch out all my equipment to go from Dish to DirecTV, she said she understood and said the best she could do for me was one free deluxe receiver with all the bells and whistles but could not offer 4 receivers. I again thanked her for trying to work on keeping me as a customer.

She noticed that I just paid my bill and told me they could turn me off at the end of my paid time or if I wanted they could shut it off tonight at Midnight and issue me a refund check (Hey Dish are you listening?) Since it was only $11 I told her to shut it off at the end of my cycle.

She was very pleasent and thanked me for my business and hoped I would keep my receiver and if I was not happy with Dish to give them a call again to get turned back on.

It was a very nice call for someone who was turning off their service. They did almost everything in their power to keep me as a customer. I wish Dish Network would learn from DirecTV in this regard, I can't even get a discounted 501 and I have 2 buggy Dishplayers which I would love to throw against a wall.

Hats off to DirecTV for properly handling this type of call, they did everything to keep me and with no questions asked offered to refund my money for services I prepaid for. Again Dish Network has a lot to learn.

All of my dealings with Directv have been like this. Any changes, problems, or anything, have been resolved quickly and professionally. I have had the same experiences with Ultimatetv. When there were spotbeam problems, I received four months of free UTV service ($40). That was more than enough. When my locals were flaking out, the gave me another $40 of free UTV service. Since I have had my first UTV (June, 2001) I haven't had to pay for UTV service at all, and my problems were very minor.

Glad you had a good cancellation(?), but we're sorry to lose you from the D* side....

Scott, I'm sorry you had to cancel DirecTV, but I'm glad that it was at least a pleasant experience dealing with their CSR's.

I'm curious as to why you had multiple providers. I'm not being critical--I subscribe to both DirecTV and Dish Network myself.

In my case, I want the sports subscriptions that only DirecTV provides. On the other hand, Dish Network provides me with Boston locals, at least for now.

I'm in 2 towns west and 2 towns south of the Boston DMA, in the ridiculously unnecessary Springfield DMA. When I subscribed to E*, I was in a white area (now, I'm outside Grade B for three networks and waivered for the other), so I was able to select any 2 of the cities they offered, and I got Boston that way.

I'm not trying to hijack your thread, but I've wondered why other folks carry more than one service. I guess I was surprised to find out there are lots of us and they can't all have my convoluted situation.

    Hey Chuck!

I am considered Gadget Boy by all my friends I have all the toys. :)

I have been a Dish Network subscriber going on 3 years now. I wanted to play with DirecTV to see how it ran, and DirecTV was having a great deal, buy Sunday ticket and get 3 months of their platinum package for free. So I got that deal.

About the only things I watched on DirecTV was the FreeViews they ran and I watched Laugh In a few times on Trio.

I did LOVE their music choice service, but then I got an XM radio I have not listened to Music Choice since.

I also have Bell ExpressVu which came in real handy during the Olympics. Luckily my wife likes ExpressVu so I can keep that.

It was nice having all 3 satellite providers available to me but paying $70 a month for a service I did not watch or use at all was a bit too much.

I would expect that in the Winter I may play with DirecTV again and see whats new.

Scott, that's as valid a reason as any. :)

I've been thinking about ExpressVu in the back of my head lately. If Dish Network's policies change and I can no longer get Boston as a distant betwork city, ExpressVu could be a viable alternative. And with a lot less duplication of programming to boot.

Thats why we like ExpressVu, we get boston locals but also there is a lot more to watch, there is not a bunch of duplication, and in saying that I mean..

In the USA Both Dish Network and DirecTV have CourtTV both of them show the same CourtTV so the its duplication of programming, in Canada they have Court TV however the programs are different.

It is wierd to see shows like Larry Sanders and the Sorpranos shown on Regular TV channels in Canada! And the Comedy Channel makes the USA's Comedy Central seem like its the "Serious Channel".

Again I was VERY HAPPY and suprised to see how DirecTV worked to try keeping me as a customer. They offered me equipment, programming etc to keep me. I can't even get Dish Network to offer me a Discount on a 501 to replace my buggy Dishplayer. (They offer me the $199 deal which is available to evey Dish Network customer no matter if they have a Dishplayer or not)

I pay $115 a month for Dish Network, was paying $70 something for DirecTV and about $30 for ExpressVu.

The funny part is I hardly ever watch TV (except for a few select shows)

Even if they have excellent customer service and customer retention dept., if people are not satisfied with their programming, I wouldn't feel sorry if they lose customers. Why is everyone sorry?

I don't believe D* is losing customers. In fact, they have exceeded their projected growth for the last two quarters (at least). If there was an honest study done, I believe you'd see more people leaving E* for D* than the other direction. I just feel bad that Scott won't have the opportunity to have a Directivo or UTV....

If the merger goes through then I will be a DirecTV customer again.

If the majority of my equipment was DirecTV equipment I would have canceled Dish Network without thinking twice.

What do you get on expressvu for $30 a month? And is that the price with an intermediary or do you have a Canadian address?

    Hey Lee,

I sent you an email detailing my ExpressVu setup.

    Scott,

I could send you a Starchoice receiver and they you'd have the grand slam!

I think it's the chance to see some different programming that draws us to each other's systems. I can see why you may like Expressvu... to see something different. For Canadians and I'm talking about those who subscribe it's for the same reason. I for instance enjoy basketball so I'd love to have TNT short of being able to subcribe to NBA League Pass. Hopefully this will all be a moot point down the road, ie. after the current court case before our Supreme court.

Getting back to Scott's cancellation. Why, Scott, would you turn down the opportinity to finagle a free DirecTV HD receiver? (From your description of the events, it doesn't sound like it would have taken much finagling, either . . .) And six months of Showtime? Seems to me that DirecTV was willing to do something that Charlie is usually loathe to do - meet a customer more than 1/2 way. Anyway, we all hope your decision works out for you. Best of luck.

To get the best selection of programming; 2 pizza dishes are needed: 1 American + 1 Canadian

    Ray,

While they were in the giving mood, I don't think that they would give me a HD receiver. :D If they did I would still need 2 more receivers for my other rooms.

    To Wants the Most Choice

I actually get all 3 services using only one Dish! (well besides Dish Networks 61.5 HD bird) :D

I will look for the address showing you how I set this up and will post it here when I find it.

    Scott,

I would be curious to learn of your ExpressVu setup as well. I am even more interested in learning how to get all three services on one dish. I already have two dishes in my yard (one Dish and one 36" pointing to Telstar 5 for international programming). I would like to add DirecTV for the sports programming, but don't want to look like the National Security Agency with 3 dishes in my yard!
