Nice upgrades PoitNarf. I may actually go with the same monitor.

I don't want to highjack this thread but I want to see what everyone thinks about the PC I am about to build. I do have a thread in the computer forum about this but I want to see what everyone here thinks and if it will be good enough for PC playback.

Anything that I should change please let me know.

    Thanks

Those specs should be more than good enough.

Looks pretty damn good. I'd add more hard drive space, but then I record OTA on the PC at 9GB an hour.

May steal some of the research you guys have done, or do I just call Dell?

I have a Lightscribe drive and use that feature "never" as the time to burn the graphic is quite long. If you won't use it, there may a slightly less expensive drive available.

    You guys are killing me....

Aboutthe only thing I can upgradeis my video card, Didn't really want to spend the money but I'm looking at this one.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161210

Guess I can also explain it off as giving us a better picture on the plasma when we video conference the sister-in-law in AZ. just have to verify that I have an extra 4 pin molex connection for it before I plunk down the money. Then I will hopefully be able to begin testing again.

My only weak spot is the graphic card, but I've been having great success with the graphic card I do have so I'm not inclined to change.

I have a 22" DELL monitor and it is absolutely fabulous. I wish I had switched earlier.

I've had no real success at all with my current card. If I don't upgrade, or hear a reason why I'm gettign the problems I'm getting, then I might as well drop out of the trial.

Someday I'll have more desk space for a widescreen monitor. Right now the 4x3 19" will have to do.

That puts my machine to shame. Don't worry, all of that together should handle just about anything you could throw at it.

Our Dell Preferred Customer discount for personal purchases is at 26% (vs. the usual 16%) for a few more days so I logged on and tried to build a comparable system.

The Dell XPS420 system has the following differences:
    • Assume the PS isn't as good
    • Add a BluRay player (part of the package)
    • Add wireless N
    • Bluetooth keyboard & mouse
    • Add ATI TV tuner
    • Single monitor
    • No UPS
This adds up to $1693, or $1837 with tax (can't avoid tax in OK since Dell has offices here).

I added your system up to be $1740 with a single monitor. No tax is automatically collected on California/Newegg purchases here (but you still "owe" the tax).

The heatsink that came in the box with my Q6600 is running fine at 3.0Ghz. Perhaps you won't need the extra cooling unit?
