You guys really know how to make a guy feel bad...

I'm trying to sneak out a $100 video upgrade so I can continue to do this and you guys are specing out $1500+ machines.

Wonder if I could get DirecTV to give me $50 in credits so I can keep testing.

Me too, although I'd REALLY like to sneak the $1500+ computer. I just don't think I could hide the bigger boxes though.....:D

I'd wait, to be honest. I bumped up my card to spec and I'm still having issues as I've posted in the right thread. That's not a ding against anyone, I'm just saying that the issues may be more software vs. hardware related.

But unfortunately my current card doesn't support HD. So it is not likely that a software patch will fix my hardware limitations. I'll be hopefully and keeping looking on the ground for a $100 bill but for the most part I'll just be reading everyones else's posts.

    :(

    OK. I bit the bullet.

Hopefully this one will work good. Didn't want to go overboard on this PC as it is 3 years old. But I figure this one will be good for the kids in a couple of years when I upgrade.

I think newegg.com should give dbstalk.com a comission for all the sales that they are getting from all you guys lately.

Wish I had the time to build a PC but what with the kiddo getting married next week, selling his house, buying a new one, moving to Tulsa, and starting a new job I'm going to be extra busy.

Used the other kiddo's needing a computer as an excuse to order this today to replace my desktop:

    Dell XPS 420
    Q6600 Quad-Core 2.4 GHz
    Vista Ultimate
    4GB
    nVidia 8800 GT 512MB
    24” E248WFP Flat Panel
    750GB HD
    Blu-ray Burner
    Bluetooth Mouse & KB
Xcelerator with ATI Theater 650 Pro Combo TV Tuner/remote
    3-year home service
    $1944 delivered

Well... with Vista SP1 now available, I might just be taking the plunge as soon as I can get one pre-built with it. I hate OS upgrades.

I still haven't been able to order mine yet. I am waiting for newegg.com or anyone at this point to get the processor in stock. It is sold out every where.

I'm thinking it's about time to push SP1 onto my test box. Might be a project for tonight.

I'm finally back in the game. Gotthe new video card installed and it passes the muster on the CyperLink Advisor. heck even my CPU has been "upgraded" to "Upgrade" status.

    Now to start testing again.

Not try hard to downrev you :) but I picked up an E4600 recently and it's nearly half the cost of the 8400 .. I am running my Linux server off of it but it's performed magnificently .. I can't tell if it truly qualifies under Cyberlink's configuration, but I suspect that it does.

Granted there are some performance differences in the processors, but the E4600 performs better than I thought it would.

Thanks for the info Doug I appreciate it. But I have been reading a lot of reviews on the E8400 and I am completely sold on it. Newegg.com actually got I am guessing one in stock yesterday. I put it in my cart and by the time a logged in it was sold out already.

I only get the time to configure a home PC about every four years so I tend to overbuy. My last PC, bought 11/2003, had a 3.06 P4-HT and 1GB of RAM. Extravagant for those days.

I'm thinking Core2Quad 6700 or Core2Extreme this time. 4GB RAM will do it for now.
