I would be able to vote if I ever get the update...
That banner is really needed, it would make things a lot clearer.
Great idea and I give it a 100% yes vote.
So it's been a week and a lot more folks have finally received the software upgrade and have had the chance to use DoublePlay ... any new thoughts on this?
One of the reasons TiVO was so successful with usability is because the user guide was so well written and thorough, and the interface was "self-documenting". If a user never read the user guide and didn't know to press DOWN to toggle tuners, all they had to do was look at the Info Banner. The icon at the right showed them there was a second tuner, and when highlighted, showed the name of the program currently playing there. Users could then press SELECT right int he info banner to toggle tuners, but the shortcut key "Down" was also listed there.
This is why I'm such an advocate for updating the Info Banner in the DVR*Plus line for the second tuner: it's self-documenting and advertises the feature, making the DVR more usable and more user-friendly, so this is a feature I'd love to see implemented.
I could see DirecTV adding what's on tuner 2 in the previous channel information(yellow button).
Like how "Previous Channels" lists the programs currently playing on the last four channels tuned? I suppose, but I think having it in the Info Banner is more noticeable, as any channel change presents the Info Banner, and it's displayed any time the user returns to live TV from a full-screen menu. DIRECTV just needs to block the display of the tuners when the user is playing a program from the playlist ... otherwise, the Info Banner could show what's on the current tuner and in a single row below it show what's on the alternate tuner, or indicate "DoublePlay is not started. Press DOWN to activate it"...
I think it's a great idea, Drew, and really hope that it's implemented.
I would also like to see the option in Setup to set DoublePlay as always being on as the default.
When I plan to turn to another channel I always check my previous channels(yellow button) to see if it is already listed. If the program on tuner 2 was listed there the program you want would only be a down arrow press away from accessing that program.
I like your idea too and I would not be surprised if the new HD guide would not have something like you describe.
