Is it just me, or does is HBOHD surprisingly poor quality?

I am still amazed when a reader of this forum thinks a program is in HD just because it is on an HD channel. C'mon folks. Educate yourself before complaining.:(

I'm actually quite pleased with the quality of the HD on shows that are HD. Stretch-o-vision or shows not filmed for HD can look pretty bad, especially in comparison, but I don't blame D* for that. They can only transmit what they are given to transmit. There are tons of shows/documentaries/you-name-it out there that were produced before HD so there's always going to be some content that's not up to the new "standard". Even reworked/remastered I'm assuming there's only so much that can be done to old movies, TV shows, etc., to make them look great in HD.

I can see a difference in PQ between D* HBO HD and TWC HBO HD.

Last friday, HBO HD was showing Star Wars 3, both on D* and TWC. I did a comparison between live and recorded versions, same results. Both were shown at 1080i, same HDMI input on my Toshiba 57" RPTV.

The TWC picture was noticeably (but not hugely) better quality than the D*version. TWC was just a little sharper, with the colors a little more saturated. I watched the intro-ship-crashing-city-flyby scene probably about 10 times back and forth.

Now, it wasn' t a huge difference: both feeds exhibited the same blocking during fast-moving explosions. But the difference was in the sharpness/detail and color/clarity. If I was judging on a scale of 100, TWC would get a 95 and D* a 92. Not huge, but noticeable.

Either way, D* has a ton more HD channels (and channels in general), the NFL Network, the Big 10 network, and plus TWC has been pissing me off lately. So I'm definitely staying with them despite the somewhat lower PQ, which I hope will be addressed in the near future.

HBO HD has always been terrible IMO. Not sure why but watching shows like Entourage in HD is barely better than SD.

I took HBO East HD and Showtime East HD out of my channel list. I just record off the West feed since it's better PQ and takes up less space being MPEG4.

I am educated; you're not talking to an idiot, son. However, when the guide has the HD icon listed next to the show's title, that's supposed to mean one thing.

Yes, this is what really bugs me about HBO, too. PQ always seemed fine to me on both HBO Showtime, but I prefer Showtime because they show the movies in their original screen size. And then, of course, Showtime has Dexter!:D

I am now doing exactly the same thing.

I have recorded multiple movies and shows on both MPEG2 and MPEG4 and can see no difference in picture quality.

HBO HD looks like upconverted SD.

I've never seen the HD icon on the Bill Mahr show in the guide, and the show isn't produced in HD so if it ever has the HD icon in the guide, it's a mistake.

That's a 50-50 proposition anyway. I wouldn't mind seeing Cheryl in HD, but Larry? SD is more than enough!

I record Real Time, and have never seen an HD listed in the guide for that program. I looked on Zap2it.com, which uses Tribune's info, and it doesn't put an HD with that program either.

Bill Mahr did a stand up special, and that was HD. It looked great.

Agree! I enjoy CYE and would love to see it in HD.
(then again, who wouldn't love to see everything in HD?)
