Is it still possible to get a free HD DVR? I need an extra and heard some say DirecTV gave them a free one.

All you can do is call and ask, but free HD-DVR's aren't that common.

They may offer you one at $99

    Anything is possible!

Everyone and every situation is different so the best thing to do is call and see what kind of deal you can work out. A buddy of mine is Arizona (who has been with DirecTV for 15+ years) was told he had to pay $199 for his but DirecTV compensated him by giving him a $250 credit on his bill, HD Access free for a year, and 3 months of Showtime.

I want to send back a SD receiver and have them send me a HD receiver (not DVR) for free, and they won't even do that for me without charging me $49.

Completely depends on your account status and history. We've been with D* since 1996 and when I called a couple of months ago, one CSR offered me a free HD-DVR, which I promptly took. Ended up being $20 total for some kind of service charge, that's it. Never hurts to try.

If you're in a market that required 2 dishes for locals, you can very likely get a free upgrade because no SD box can handle MPEG4 for locals.

That was the charge for shipping.
