Quick description of my issue. I have a dead HR24 receiver. Called DirecTV (now AT&T).
Rep said that it will take "a while" to get a replacement out to me due to a shortage. Really? Its been a week and a half now.

How could they possibly have let themselves run out of a basic receiver like an HR24?

How many years have they been out of production?

They must be lagging badly in the refurbishment department. With the massive churn they've been experiencing, you'd think they'd have plenty of units available for redeployment.

I don't believe they refurbish receivers if they are more than five years old - they've been fully depreciated. I could easily imagine that fewer and fewer HR24s they get back are still 'young' enough to refurbish.

You may not be able to get them at all in another year or two.

    No - there's a sub shortage.

If they continue to lose a couple of million subscribers a year, there should be plenty of equipment floating around.

That's kinda hard to believe. All they do is reformat the HR. Takes a few minutes.

So, if an HR24 hard drive or power supply fails, they just toss the whole receiver? I'm curious to know what the number of active HR24's today is compared to 2013 or '14. It just seems that they should have more than enough refurbs to replace defective ones.

Far as I can see, they do practically nothing you couldn't do at home. Simple to get an HR back to factory defaults. What they should do is replace every HDD as soon as they come in. That would solve most problems. I don't think they pop the top on any refurb.

Perhaps D* uses distribution centers. If the distribution center near you has no HRs you get nothing till some arrive. Only thing I can think of, I think there are plenty of HRs in existence.
