So I've been back with DirecTV for a week now, enjoying the service, etc. Used to have three HR-2Xs, now the Genie and two minis. But I've noticed that when I turn on a TV that's connected to a mini, I often get a white screen for about 5 seconds before the channel engages. Also have been having trouble with the EPG, with some channels showing, some channels not, sometimes the guide isn't there at all. Have to unplug the main Genie and plug it back in. Is this normal?

    No, it is not normal.
Instead of unplugging the Genie, try using the red button to reset it or if the Genie is not frozen you can use the software version of the rest, just like a shut down / restart of a pc.

The blank screen when first starting up the genie mini is somewhat normal. Sometimes it takes a little while to get the DECA stream up and running from the Genie server.

The EPG data missing is not normal.

correct. I often set up the screen to black instead of grey. This makes it appear more "normal". But agree 100% the screen is all normal while the client connects to the server.

Also on older TVs sometimes this is not noticed as by the time the TV comes on the client has already stablished a connection.

Yes this is normal. Just part of the beast. If you want on the Genie press the reset button on the right hand side of it, wait for the blue Directv to light up on the left hand front. On the remote press 0,2,4,6,8 this will force a software update. Might help. Might not.

I've been trying that for years and it's never done anything for me.

It comes down to timing, but it's the only way to have a receiver "look" for soft/firmware

Do it as soon as it lights up. May have to press enter. I do it all the time. Sometimes genies won't link until the up date.

Would a search for CLEARMYBOX help as well if software is up to date?

When those two numbers match you are pretty much wasting your time. Number on the right shows current software number on the left shows software downloading. [IMG]

It is a good illustration that such action is pointless (unless one feels the last download was corrupted). Unless one is attempting to download special software for testers during the window that such software is available (with all the associated risks) or trying to return to the released software for your receiver a forced download has little value.

Thanks for the insight. Guess nothing's perfect. As long as the service is there ... :)
