I have just got the hopper 3 with joeys installed yesterday. We didt turn off our receivers in the past EVER. I need to know if there is a way to make the power button only affect the tv. Also is their a infrared remote i can buy that will work with the joey? Something not to expensive preferably not a Harmony one.

You don't ever want to disable powering off of the receivers . BY DEFAULT, they have an inactivity timer going (can't be completely turned off), and part of that is to get SW updates (yes , Dish still updates receivers when necessary). It is more important on the Hoppers and other DVRs that they get power off time.

As far as Infrared reception - go to the Settings, then remote, then go down until you find that setting and it toggles on / off.

The only way to turn off a Dish receiver is to pull the power plug - DON'T DO THAT!
If the receiver is in stand-by, pressing the Select button will wake it up.

More important is nightly reboot !
DVR's FW is full of bugs and memory leakage would kill functionality of the device if not reboot it each day. They just have no ability to debug FW/SW in house.

Problem solved! A dish network 21.0 is infrared only and will control joey and hopper 3. I have ordered one for only $10 and will use it to program the learning remote i have. Its a great learning remote for the elderly i post the link here for it. very simple sleek and easy to use for them. It cost me about $15 for it. It comes and only sold in the eu tho. The "Inactivity Timeout" can be set to "Off (not recommended)". 4 Hours is the default.
The "Daily Reset Time" can be set to any hour (including during the daytime). It cannot be turned off.
