So tomorrow is the day when the Johnstown/Altoona/State College DMA gets its 72.5 locals permanently shut off, and I have noticed something weird.

We get our CW station out of Pittsburgh (WPCW) and it is broadcast on 101, not 72.5, but yet starting at 6 AM tomorrow the guide info for WPCW talks about needing to do a dish swap in order to continue receiving it.

I am starting to wonder if this means starting tomorrow we will receive WPCW in HD (especially since E* started carrying it in HD recently) but I don't want to get my hopes up. Anybody have any idea if this is in the works?

Well...it was the exact opposite of what I was hoping. Looks like they totally took away WPCW. Its not even available in SD anymore. Doesn't appear in the guide. Very disappointing.

I'm guessing we have to pay for a distant CW now from the looks of it. And those aren't even in HD.

Also paragon, have you ever called and inquired about them not carrying WHVL MyNetworkTV out of State College? I've sent an email about it before and they replied saying it's out of our market. That's probably the worse response I've ever gotten from them since we know that isn't true..

    Broken...
I just looked up WHVL on Wikipedia. It's a low power TV station. It might be very difficult for them to get carriage on DirecTV, especially if they're asking for compensation instead of must carry (if eligible).

Yeah, that's a good point. There would probably be more cost and effort in getting the signal than it would be worth.

Actually I think DirecTV made a decision earlier this year to drop all low power stations.

I've emailed DIRECTV about WHVL and got a canned response. I've also emailed WHVL and they basically said tell DIRECTV you want it and in the meantime get an antenna. These emails were awhile ago, before WHVL even went digital. I doubt it will ever be carried since it is low power.

It's absurd to me that they would drop WPCW from our lineup even though they continue to carry it in Pittsburgh. Especially since E* now has it in HD. I don't get it at all.

According to the WHVL's website, they supply cable systems with signal via fiber.

I think their approach is to have an OTA presence (low power as it is) but act more like a regional cable network.

I just checked my guide and we have WPCW back on channel 14. It's actually labeled WPCW now instead of just CW like it was before.

DirecTV must have either gotten some complaints or realized they screwed up and it was never supposed to go away in the first place.

Yes, it does appear to be back. I guess they just removed it from the guide by accident when they took down the 72.5 channels. I did send them an email about it this afternoon, but haven't gotten a response yet other than "your inquiry has been forwarded to a specialist". Good to see that there isn't actually a reduction in service. Now we just need to get WPCW in HD.
