Awww screw it. Friday and Saturday is my "normal" days off anyways, plus I have Wednesday off as well. I have over 240 hours of accumulated PTO, so I said, "What the hell.... I'm taking Thursday off."

Approved, although I have to go back to my boss with a extremely lame excuse.

I earn PTO and don't get holiday pay separate from that. It is a "make your own holiday" world, and as long as the work is covered time off is not a problem. (BTW: The PTO calculation is a number of hours earned per hour worked and works out better than my last job where specific holidays, personal days and vacation weeks were earned.)

It is easier to cover the work on a holiday when people do not expect me to be at work. My boss works all holidays and cashes out his PTO (using a few days a year for personal things). The phone doesn't ring on holidays so I'm not missed and he catches up on paperwork.

As for July 4th ... being a single day that floats makes it hard to get out of town but it is one of those days MOST of my family gets off. So it is the one day a year they are invited over to my house for the cookout. It works out nicely.

That's one of the things I have to watch out for, too. They drunks? Mine is usually blotto.
