    We are cutting back.

Called E* about Turbo HD last night.
I can get all their HD channels that include all that I currently watch, my HD locals, and a DVR for $44.99
I currently pay DTV $70.97 for grandfathered Total Choice Plus, HD Access, DVR fee and the protection plan.
$311.76 savings per year (based on programming and fees) sounds pretty good to me.

I don't think DTV could offer anything close but I'm going let them try tonight.

    What would I miss?

That depends largely on how your locals stack up with DISH versus DIRECTV and whether or not you might get them OTA.

According to DISH I get the ones that matter to me ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and OPB.
I am prepared for OTA as that's the only we we got CBS until recently.

If you're truly open to staying with DirecTV and tell them what the Dish offer is you'll probably get a matching deal. The Plus HD DVR package is currently 49.99 for new customers for 12 months. I'm sure if you've been a good paying customer for as long as it appears you have been they'll give you at least that $5 discount/month to match Dish. Of course all of this depends on past credits, payment history, etc.

    Good luck!

Are the locals you are getting from Dish in HD?

For the next three weeks or so, two dishes will be helpful. Once Ciel 2 comes online, a single Dish 1000 (110W, 119W and 129W) should work fine.

That might be a bit unrealistic, to think they are going to get that bird full lit up and running in 3 weeks.. try 1 to 3 months... and thats assuming they light up everything almost all at once...

Did you check on your RSN? is it available in HD via Dish?

And if not, then you can cut back to Directvs family package and hd and dvr and it should come out to around 45 too.... and you'd get some more sd channels...

You are also comparing two different things, a full-priced D* package and a new customer price for E*. You have to compare them equally at full-price to get a true comparison. Also D*'s customer service is better IMO...

They are telling me that I will need two dishes even after the new bird comes online. I don't like the idea of two dishes on my humble abode one is bad enough!

Well I only watch the Trailblazers:D on occasion...and the NFL playoffs/Superbowl so I'm thinking RSNs aren't of a big concern.

Well first off, there's something wrong with your math here....
If you truly are paying for the protection plan, your bill should be MORE than $71:

TC+ $55 (I have this myself & this is what I'm paying now...)
    HD access $10
    DVR fee $6
    protection $8

So, as someone else said, you really need to make sure you're comparing apples to apples AFTER ALL the E* promo's run out - are you on some kind of promo w/D* now???

And oh, if you do NOT have either a landline or broadband access, make sure you include E*'s little $5/month penalty on the 2nd tuner (except for the 612 DVR)

I'm not getting any special programming rates but I'm getting the install and equipment free.

    TURBO HD GOLD $39.99
    LOCALS $5.99
    PLUS TAXES
    thats it!

Of course be prepared for Dish to drop a local station or any other station you love with no notice. Happens at least every 6 months. That alone will keep me from ever going to Dish, no matter how much money I could save.
