As others have said, that is an embarrassing try at showing the Lakers popularity.

I watch and DVR most ESPN shows and see a variety of teams lead off the shows depending on what happens that day with the teams.

Lakers are popular but in terms of the total TV viewing public they are just nowhere near the national draw that Lakers fan think

Much bigger draw than you may think. Checkout my post from a few weeks back.

Lakers #1 draw in pacific, national and sports categories. :D Out of their 20 plus million customers, Lakers were #1 in terms of DIRECTV viewership. Not bad for a "local" team. :D

    NOT true at all.

NBA LP Broadband is tied in to your IP address when lauching the service. Your DTV zip has nothing to do with it.

I've watched the last 4 Lakers games on my LP BB via 'Hide My A$$ VPN' and it's worked perfectly - in HD quality using HDMI out to my HDTV.

Actually you are DEAD WRONG. The Lakers (along with the Yankees and the Cowboys) are the biggest draw in pro sports domestically and globally. If you think otherwise then you're either misinformed or have a personal dislike towards the Lakers organization.

thats why nba finals where the lakers are involved in are historically the highest rated because they have no national following , right

Actually, the last 2 Bulls titles were the highest rated.

You also have NBA LP on your TV too? Or just Broadband?

The way you describe it has never been the case for me. Lakers games have always been blacked out via my broadband account.

I'll try tonight again and report back.

No, it's simply pointing out how popular the Lakers are.

Again, you obviously never look at the numbers. They are bigger than most people realize, and that's why twc wants so much. They are to the nba what the Yankees are to MLB, maybe even more so. Twc can charge huge amounts of money for advertising during Lakers games.

The games are broadcast to 160 countries in the world. Of course espn is expected to lead with whatever story is big for any team on any one day. This is the regular local news.... I not saying their priorities are right, but they are that popular.

In terms of overall total viewing public? No, they aren't for the majority of people. Mobutu then no sports is!. But in the nba sports world, yes they are...

There was not one but two giant ads in the Los Angeles times sorts page today about this channel and how DirecTV doesn't have it. One was about getting the channel, the other was telling people to get twc and dump DirecTV because they have the Lakers channel and pac12 channels. And they where both full page ads. I don't think they have called off the marketing one bit.

And that is exactly what TWC wanted (dump D* and sign up for their TV service) despite what they have said about not wanting to get into the RSN business.

nothing against the lakers organization and I know that Phil Jackson carried the team for 10 or so years but could they look for any other coach presently in the NBA because you gotta understand Phil been in the NBA for 25 years or so and can't keep just keep coming back out of retirement whenever the team has it's flaws.

Even if DirecTV picks up the channel they will still run their ads for switching...

I still say in the long run, they both dearly need each other, because at the end of the day its all about the money, and they will both lose money if they don't agree to terms, and gain money of they do.

    Generally true...

One of them is specific to tonight's game...

I think they have a standing ad spot, and its just a matter of changing the content, which can be done instant, as that's what I saw when charter and FIOS etc where added from one day to the next.

Exactly. This has MORE to do with TWC getting DTV customers to "jump ship" than with TWC trying to work out a deal with DTV.

Eventually it will happen but more and more it's looking like TWC (and not DTV) is the one who is playing games and is stalling negotiations in order to get people to switch over to TWC or another cable providers and put a dent in DTV's overall dominance in the So Cal region.

Another good point. While it is all Time Warner, an ad selling cable service is a different part of the company than the sports channel.

I have both but being that I reside in So Cal, it's BLACKED OUT on both. Using VPN on my PC, I can view Lakers games w/o the blackout restriction with LP Broadband because my IP address is changed to a different location with VPN.

I just called my cable company and it is too expensive to sign up for even just one non DVR HD receiver even with their new customer first few months deal. I am not leaving D* I have too much invested in equipment and don't want to relearn channel numbers but I would be pleased if D* came to an agreement to show TWC Sportsnet. I would be willing to pay the additional $4 per month or whatever to see the Lakers, but I am willing to wait for D* to negotiate a fair deal. In the interim I will be watching the Clippers and am awaiting the return of NHL hockey maybe this year.
