I empathize for you, though sitting inside at a nice warm desk I can't really appreciate what you're going through.

Kiddo up in Tulsa called a local installer (he is thoroughly pissed at DirecTV and won't talk to them) and they came out immediately to remount and aim his dish (new roof, but original install by D* was bad - monopoles uselessly mounted and bad aiming/low signal strengths) and got it done before the storm hit up there. Now he's sitting home off work today while his wife had to go in. But she works at a car rental place so I imagine that there were plenty of folks needing to rent cars after wrecking theirs.

I loved the irony, btw, of You-Know-Who discussing you-know-what today in Washington, D.C., which was shut down by a snowstorm.

We've been without electricity here since Tuesday night. My daughter, her baby and her husband are staying with us because they only have electric heat--we have gas heat at my house, but the main furnace won't work because there is no power for the thermostat, so we are huddled around small heaters in two rooms.

All our refrigerated/frozen food is ruined. Dinner is fast food.

I had to hook up an old gas heater in our utility building to keep the water line to our washer from freezing.

And no TV! I have a portable DVD player that I could charge at work and watch a couple of DVDs per night, but nobody is too excited about a 7-inch screen.

If the power is not back on by Super Bowl Sunday (go Steelers!) I'm going to buy a power inverter and run an extension cord in from the car for a TV and DVR.

...and obviously you have Internet connectivity...:)

Your situation is terrible. I've only had to go through that once myself...and you quickly learn to appreciate the basic things in life...like food, water, etc...

Keep warm, and lets hope your power comes up ASAP.

    From Yahoo & AP:
Some folks could be in for a lengthy wait in regards to restoration of electricity.
Utility officials estimated more than 1.3 million homes and businesses across several states were without power as of this morning.
They warned that it could be mid-February before some people will get power restored.

I just talked to our power company...she said an additional crew was coming in this afternoon from North Carolina, but she did not know which areas would get worked on first, and that it could be 4 to 6 days before we get power.

I see from news articles that people are in worse shape than me. I'm just thankful that I do have natural gas heat (as long as it doesn't freeze off.)

The electrical situation there sounds like Vero Beach after Hurricane Jeanne in 2004. I imagine that the cold slows things down a bit though. We had repair crews from all over the country here.[IMG]

I'll take snow and cold any day over that. The eye of Hurricane Ike passed right over my brother's subdivision in NW suburban Houston in September. Wind gusts were measured at 156 mph.

No thanks. I'll be content with a little cold and snow any day!
