In Vegas which I understand is a test market for the new Local Channel Connector in a mailed flyer D* is offering a $10/month credit for new customers that sign up for a SELECT package without local stations. The credit is broken down as a $3/month credit versus a package with locals and $7/month bill credit. The fact that D* broke down the credit in two parts indicates to me that the $3/month discount is planned as an ongoing credit while the $7/month credit is something that they think they could eliminate in a year or so depending on customer response. Smart structuring perhaps $3 is all that most people would require once they already have the dongle and antenna.

The LCC is offered for free.

D* indicated that a compatible DVR (HR-44 or HR-54) is required. No mention about HS-17.

Since D* costs for local channels is probably more than $3 but less than $10 it has the potential to be a cost saving for D* if ongoing it is only the $3 credit that remains.

Will they be able to get away with this in O&O markets?

Vegas in not an O&O market. Perhaps there are station renewals coming up and this gives D* a tool to tell stations that D* can distribute LCC's to all D* subscribers and then station will get no retransmission fees, so accept the D* offer better than nothing. Makes business sense.

Locals cost cable/satellite companies at least $10/month these days and that will only go higher, so hopefully they plan to give more than a $3/month credit long term. Even if they credited the full amount of the savings it is good for Directv because the fewer customers who are dependent on satellite for their locals the more leverage they over them during negotiation (i.e. blackouts affect fewer customers)

I could care less about the credit. I would like to get my hands on the adaptor.

Hope it’s smaller than my AM21’s

MUCH smaller. It is a little USB dongle, probably similar in size to a DECA.

How will we know when the LCC is available? Any idea yet if the LCC's ATSC tuner is any better than the AM21's ATSC tuner? Do we know if this will be free to D* subs?

I am surprise that the device has to have it own power supply? Why couldn't they use the USB power for the LCC ATSC tuner?

If they copy the Vegas test market model, it will be free if you delete locals from your plan. If they copy the AM-21 model, it will be $50 no change in plan. Perhaps they will employ both models.
