I need to call D* soon and lower my costs. I am doing this with all my service providers due to my wife being layed off and I am soon to be too. I would like to keep HD and my DVR's. What is the lowest package DTV offers with HDDVR service? If I can't get below $60 a month I may as well cancel. :(

Best bet is to call and ask them. They may offer you a discounted rate on your current package because of your situation or they can tell you what you could downgrade to and what channels you may lose.

If that doesn't get you low enough, you can suspend for 6 months. That may be enough time to get you back on your feet.

Good luck to you and your wife on the job hunt.

I called about a month ago and had the choice extra or something and wanted to cut costs, the guy send me a new HD DVR and my new package is now.....

The Select package, was 39.99 a month, he dropped it to 29.99 a month for a year. HD service 10.00, and waived that for a year, DVR service, 7.00. Plus free showtime/cinemax for a year. Total with tax from their site I copied and pasted.

    Current Balance:
    $42.04

Advertised the lowest package is Family, which is $29.99/mo and then would have $10/mo for HD Access and $7/mo for DVR (so around $47/mo all together). You also would have the $5/mo fee for any additional receivers/DVRs.

There also is an unadvertised Select package that some like as it seems to have a better channel lineup than Family. But it is $39.99/mo vs. $29.99 for Family.

Thanks for the replies. I thought there must be more options aside from what is listed on their website.

I'd still call in and explain the situation. I'm sure DirecTV is well aware of the situation many subscribers are going through and would like to keep them as customers with the hope that when things turn around they will once again upgrade to higher-cost programming options. An example is the hidden "select" package designed to retain subscribers.

Remember as the price drops so does the number of services in the package. The price maybe lower but did you lose the programming you watch?

I am going to call next week. I will be happy with a package similar to basic cable as long as I get HD and DVR service.

Please let us know what happens. I am also interested in cutting costs while keeping HD and DVR service.

I ended up with a "special" package similar to basic cable for $43 a month including HD and DVR service on two units. I was given a 12 month credit for the DVR and HD fees to get to that price. My wife lost her Bravo and Lifetime and I lost my Prime Tickets and Golf around sixty channels gone, but with the situation we are in it makes sense so we can live with it, hopefully short term. :)

Can someone confirm that Food Network is in Family but not in the more expensive Select? What's up with that?

Remember that if you changed your package in the middle of your billing period, your previous package is pro-rated to the time you had it.

For example, you go from a $60 plan to a $40 plan half-way through the billing period. You will be billed $60 and then credited $30 (1/2) for the old plan and then $40 with a $20 credit the second half of the billing period. So, the cost for the billing period would be $50 ($10 more than your new rate, but $10 less than your old rate).
