Star Trek Universe Loses Majel Barrett Roddenberry
FULL ARTICLE HERE
A sad story. She will be missed.
Actually, her best known role would probably be as the voice of the Enterprise's computer! People probably knew her that way for a long time before knowing she was Roddenberry's wife.
Additionally, they would have known her as Nurse Chapel on the original series... and as Deanna Troi's mother (don't ask me to spell that character's name) on TNG.
Oddly enough, in the original Star Trek Pilot she was slated to be the 2nd in command! But the suits at the network weren't ready for a woman to be "in charge" like that... and so after the re-tooling she was left as Nurse Chapel. Would have been interesting to see her carry the 2nd in command role. Though she wasn't that well known as an actress, it would appear she was more capable than she often was used.
The original pilot - The Cage , The Menagerie
I did hear that she fought only a quick battle, and that's very merciful. She will be missed.
She also appears on Earth:Final Conflict . She had a picture of Gene on her desk in the show.
The world is much smaller today......
The obit in our paper today said she just finished her voice work two weeks ago for the upcoming Star Trek movie where she'll once again be the computer's voice. Sorry to read of her passing.
She was also an abassador of sorts. She did a guest spot on "Babylon 5" as a Centauri psychic (Lady Morella, if I remember the name correctly). Kinda quieted the fanby "B5 vs Trek" wars.
I had the privledge of meeting her quite awhile back. She was a gracious lady, protective of the her husband's legacy and the Star Trek Universe. She was also no Dilettante, she knew her stuff, the series history, and provided wise guidance thru the many iterations of Start Trek.
Star Trek's "Grand Dame" has passed and we are the poorer for it.
At one point, she was the answer to a trivia question that basically asked who had been in every production of Star Trek (movies, cartoons, TV shows). That broke a while back but it was fun to think that she was almost always around and part of the universe. And good to hear that she did participate in the next movie.
