OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) -- An Oklahoma man arrested on suspicion of beating his wife faced year in prison and a fine. But when he spit in an arresting officer's face, he got a life sentence instead, officials said Wednesday.

The guy sounds like an a-hole but a LIFE SENTENCE? ....Damn those people out there are nuts.

Was it one of those "Three Strikes" deals, lots of guys going to jail for life due to previous infractions and one LAST "minor" infraction.

So, evidently spitting on a cop is a worse crime than child molesting?

It just happened to be the last crime he committed. It could have been wife beating, drugs, theft, etc... It just happened to be the one last crime that put him over the top.

The media likes to focus on the relatively small "final" crime, but frequently ignores the other crimes that preceded it. Crime keeps going down as these habitual offenders get to get all predatory on each other in the can rather than against us outside the prison walls.

If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. Hey, if it is your first offense, OK then a little leniency may be in order. As long as it comes with the finger wag pointing out that any further crimes will be met with much harsher punishment.

Actually the act of spitting on a government officer in Oklahoma has a life sentence of its own, but in this case the background of the offender certainly helped. "Three Strikes" I believe didn't actually come into play officially here.

I wish we had laws like this in NY. I had a perp spit in my eye once and I believe he was out of jail before I even got the results of my hepatitus and HIV tests back. (All negative, thank god)

Very slim possibility, but scary nonetheless, considering the call was a domestic disturbance between two gay males.

Oh, yeah. I never did use a common cup for communion very often, but I remember a communion service in the mid '80's where I had a gal who absolutely refused to drink out of the same cup as anyone else. She was sure she was going to get AIDs from someone else in our little town in South Dakota.
