Yup. There's a flag on your account saying you have OTA. Thus, they will try to replace a HR20 with a HR20.

Unfortunately, that is not true. If you opt to get a new receiver (not a replacement) and it turns out to not be a HR20, you need to obtain an AM21 at your own cost. However, you might be (and it seems you were) able to get DirecTV to send you one for free.

Well, this upgrade adventure is almost over. Note I wrote 'almost'.

The 24-500, AM21 and bedroom R16 are installed and running. The Cisco Cinema Plus is not installed yet because the sub sub contract company doing the upgrade is not authorized to install this device (or the AM21 for that matter). Another tech is scheduled to come out Wednesday.

I am very, very happy to say the Tech who worked here Saturday gave excellent service, was extremely friendly, tidy and especially polite to my wife. He throughly explained why his company had such a limited job scope (they only do basic upgrades). Even though he was not obligated to he went ahead and installed the AM21. Of course I could have installed everything myself had I use of both arms and hands.

So far we love the advantages of the 24-500 and look forward to the final portion of the install.

    Till then.....1953 ;)

Did you receive an AM21 or AM21N?

Quite loose and comfortable. Thanks for asking. Now if I could only lose some weight! ;)

Your time and frustration probably paid off very well for you. The chances of getting a replacement 20-xxx that works correctly are slim at best. They have to run out of working 20s sometime and if my experience mirrors others, they are pretty rare now. I haven't received one that worked correctly in a long time. I think you did well.

Thank you. The best move was to refuse the replacement and go for an upgrade. Entering into a new contract was of no concern to us.

What is the difference between the AM21 and AM21N?? When my HR-20 died D* sent me a free HR21 and sold me an AM21 for $49. I only use OTA on my motorhome and the HR20 was great for that. I have been using the HR20/AM21 boxes on the motorhome and OTA reception on the 21 is not nearly as good as the ATSC tuners built into my TV's. Has anyone else had this problem? I bought the 21 because I wanted to record some national network programs while we are on the road but it just doesn't work that well (sigh).

Here is an excellent first look at the AM21N by DBSTALK.

I just got a free upgrade to the HR-24 with free install and Cinema Plus.
The tech took the 3 feed horn thingys off the tip of my slimline dish and put in a newer looking one also with 3 different looking feeds ..he said it was $200 but directv paid for it....he also left behind the old black (e band converter bbc module device) from my previous HD converter and ran the cable directly to the HR-24.

I just added 2 refferals with my freinds and both of them also got an HR-24-500

What is it about the AM21 or N version that makes it a piece of junk? I've been using two of them for several years and they have worked just fine for me.

OK, but it seems as if we are speaking of that here as some sort of add-on feature with value beyond a basic DVR. IIRC, it is bundled as a basic feature with every DVR. (am I right-am I wrong)

Doesn't work nearly as well as ATSC tuners in my Visio TV's.

Our AM21N works perfectly. The OTA stations with counterparts on DTV locals are just as pristine. The other OTA HD stations are also excellent.
