Not an issue here.
What raid boxes and drives are you using? And how many drives are in your raid5, three or four?
I used MS2UT(+) in the past - two of them. They are pretty much the same as MR2UT except with LCD display. This was on HR20. The second one was because the first one died. Went through a couple of dead drives in a few years. They ran too hot. The last firmware upgrade I did disabled the throttled fan - ran it at full speed all the time. That was the last straw. They also misbehaved after HR firmware upgrades. I have other posts with more details about the issues.
My issue with desktop drives is when used in RAID. The firmware settings in the drive are not designed for RAID configurations. In other words the drive and controller will not be cooperating as they should when there are errors - especially transient errors. That is why WD came out with the RED series. In short, non-RAID-compatible drives should not be used in RAID.
This is what I'm using for my RAID5 setup on my HR44: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006MB9B2E/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
4 drives all 2TB Seagate Constellation Enterprise drives. I also have this enclosure on my Mac Pro running RAID5 with 4x 3TB Seagate Constellation Enterprise drives.
This is what I use on my HR34: http://www.amazon.com/Sans-Digital-MR2UT-MobileRAID-Enclosure/dp/B007QQ4584/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1398377995&sr=8-6&keywords=sans+digital+raid
Again, Seagate Constellation Enterprise drives. I have 3 of this enclosure total.
I've not had any issues with any of the enclosures.
The MR2UT+ is better than the MS2UT+ (There is no just plain MR2UT, they are all +'s)
Here's an update on my purchase of a Mediasonic 4 bay HFR2-SU3S2 RAID enclosure and 2 Seagate ST2000DX001 drives.
I received everything two days ago. I set the two drives up as raid0 striping and attached it to my HR44. I was able to record 5 shows at once while rewinding through one of the recordings and watching an earlier part of it. While doing this I did not experience any slowness or skipping. The performance of the DVR was the same as when not recording.
So, it's been running for about 40 hours now with no issues. I have ordered 2 additional Seagate ST2000DX001 drives last night and when they arrive I plan to test a raid5 configuration.
I'll let you know how that goes.
Thanks again for all your comments.
Over a week ago I received the other two hard drives and added them to the array. I was in a hurry and didn't have the time to play. So, I configured straight to raid10. I haven't had any problems.
Take care all,
if you could - what is total cost of your setup ?
1 Mediasonic 4 bay HFR2-SU3S2 RAID enclosure - Purchased from Newegg for $167. Looks like price went up now to $189.
4 Seagate ST2000DX001 drives - Purchased from Amazon. Bought the first two for $119. Then the second two for $109. Looks like the current price is $116.
The total being $623. Me=Did I really spend that much? I probably shouldn't have spent that much. Wife= Are you f'ing kidding me!
From the dead... Long term results still positive?
towerraid still works fine, now on an hr44 (4 wd20-eurs, raid 5)
mobileraid and mediasonic moved to my home server- both have the "disconnect" bug on usb3, so had to use an esata card
both towerraid and mobilerraid refurb still available on ebay from sans digital
(make sure to get the "hardware raid" model-"port multiplier" isn't supported on hr44 or hr24)
Like to post and update. The setup I put together has been rock solid in the raid10 configuration and I haven't lost a drive yet. And let me say that the unit is heavily used.
