Agreed. And look how many thousands of posts and page reads each quarterly HD Anticipation thread gets. Plus I always see numerous posts on DirecTV's forums, Facebook and Twitter feeds. It sure is an important topic to people, especially those who feel cheated because their local cable provider offers more basic HD, but they can't afford to break out of a contract.

Satracer started this post right? If so, he or she obviously sees all the replies in their forum user cp. Not to mention, the high amounts of traffic on the anticipation threads since they post in there every so often. If they are of any intelligence, they will stress this desire and popularity of the need for more HD on DirecTV to their superiors. Satracer, Mike White, Romulo, and any other DirecTV employee... Wouldn't it be great to work for a company that is consumer centric, listens to their customers, takes channel suggestions and acts on it? You'd be number 1 in that department, and that would be something to be proud of. Not this half-baked attempt at basic HD channels.

Maybe I should not focus on the multi-billion part, but...

    Old joke.

A man walks up to a lady at a bar and says "I will give you a million dollars to have sex with me".

She agrees. He hands her a $10.

Outraged, she says "What do you think I am"

He says, "We have already established the what, now we are negotiating terms."

As to the moral police comments, and all the comments like it, well you are welcome to your opinions. Like I have said, I don't expect to change any minds in a forum.

If the worst thing that is ever said about me here is that I have an overly inflated sense of morals, I can handle that with not a small amount of smugness. Of course, smugness is vanity, which is a deadly sin. So I guess I have my own issues and probably should not worry so much about other small things.

DirecTV would also point out that we're just a very tiny (less than 1%) sample of their subscription base and that the desires expressed here are hardly representative of the rest who're probably happy with the HD they already have and would be quite happy to have much less if it meant they could have another $10 a month taken off their bill :)

Actually, you can't go too far wrong using that as a rule of thumb.

Do you really think they don't want to have that? And in all honesty, they don't need more HD. They haven't added much HD, but they've continued to grow in subscription numbers...Not bad for needing HD.

Shorts is in Dish's Platiimum Package, but MoviePlex SD is in it.

Hmm... My wife is not a member of DBSTalk, nor would she ever be interested in that sort of thing, but I can assure you that she wishes we had E!, Style, Oxygen, We, Fuse, AMC all in HD just like when we had Comcast (sans Oxygen at the time).

So then are all the Facebook and twitter posts just DBSTalk members reposting their wants on DirecTV's social media place?

I'd also be curious as to the amount of email DirecTV receives regarding channel requests.

Although more HD is better than nothing, I can tell you that most of the candidates for HD Extra, including Shorts, aren't worth having. Besides Epix and G4, I never watch any of them. The ones I'm talking about are a subset of Alan's list:

    Epix 1
    Epix 2
    Fashion TV
    G4
    Indieplex
    MavTV
    PixL
    Retroplex
    Shorts HD
    WealthTV
    World Fishing Network

Hopefully adding one channel will at least create some momentum to add more.

You answered your own question with your second sentence. :goodjob:

Like the vast majority of large corporations, DirecTV's business model has nothing to do with keeping most of their current customers happy. It is all about attracting new customers -- which they do nicely with attractive promotional rates and packages and freebies -- and retaining them, which they do by shackling them with ETFs, and two-year contract extensions when upgrading hardware.

All this does wonders to maximize ROI and NOI. And if a considerable number of customers are unhappy, but won't manifest their displeasure by dropping the service, then that suits DirecTV just fine. Twenty-first-century-style American capitalism at work.

Though we don't know if the majority of subscribers are unhappy. Most of the D* subscribers I know seem pretty content and aren't hanging round here complaining about the lack of additional HD.

In fact several have recently been singing D*'s praises and even managed to get some of those cash rewards for adding more subscribers

But you can get Shorts HD for free too, D* doesn't mind. :nono2:

Why would they carry want to carry it, when it is free on You Tube?

its not free on Youtube, he's comparing the 2: Youtube has short videos and Shorts HD has short films.

Personally, I'd be content to have BBCA in HD Extra Pack (while BBCA SD stayed in basic). . .but I suspect a few other people might be picking up the pitchforks and torches over that. . . :)

D* doesn't carry channels that way. If they carry both the SD and HD feeds they have the same channel number and are on the same package. My favorite part of D*, simplicity. :)

Oh, I'm aware they haven't, and I'd agree it isn't all that likely they'd start now. But I'd still personally be happier with that than, say, ShortsHD, in HDEP.
