PBS has been running the new series of Miss Marple on Masterpiece Mysteries featuring Julia McKenzie. She's the third actress in recent years to play the role. Geraldine McEwan played the role for the first three series of Agatha Christie's Marple. Back in the 90's Joan Hicksen played the role. My favorite is Hicksen, I liked her rather unpleasant version of Miss Marple and the writing on the shows was nicely complex with lots of layers to the characters. Geraldine McEwan played it with a bit more humor, giving us a precocious version of Miss Marple. The comedy angle was fun and campy, but the writers butchered the hell out of some of the stories. Julia McKenzie's Marple seems completely flat to me. She plays it way too bland and straight. But that's just my take. What do you guys think?
