They are giving my free 4k upgrade this week.

Question, will i have to setup my series and scheduled recordings again or will they move over?

    Thanks!

You will have to program your series and scheduled recordings on your new HR54.

Take pics of your series screens so they will be easy to re-setup.

Assuming one does not have a 4K TV and no plans of purchasing one is there much benefit of the HR54 vs the HR44?

The HR44 uses a resistive touch front panel with a pop out door that houses the Red Reset Button, Access Card and USB Port. The HR54 uses a resistive touch front panel Power On/Off. The Red Reset Button and Access Card are located on the right side panel. The rear panel on the HR44 houses the following... Satellite In... Video Out/Audio Out... Optical/Digital Audio Out... HDMI Out... Ethernet... USB/eSATA... Phone Line... Power Input. The rear panel on the HR54 house the following...Satellite In...A/V Out...Optical/Digital Out...HDMI...Ethernet...USB/eSATA...Power Input.

Not capacitive touch panels? I didn't know that. First time I've seen that mentioned.

Get an HS-17. I love it (I had an HR-44). We both think the PQ is better with the client/server model.

You think the HS-17 has better picture quality compared to the HR44? You'd think the HR54 would be the same as the HR44. I don't know much about the HS-17.

Honestly, they all output the same pq. It may seem better but that's usually just adjustments you can make on your tv to make them look identical...

I hope the HS17 doesn't go down, you will be sol if it does. I have an HR44 and HR24. If one of them doesn't work I still have the other one. Honestly I don't know why anyone would want an HS17. It makes no sense to me.

All depends on if you want individual receivers like you have. I'm sure a ton of people use the client setup, which works the same way. If the HR44 or HR54 goes out, you have no TV. Guess the only positive of the HR44 & 54 is that you can have the receivers you want mixed in with it. Currently, I have the HR54 DVR with 3 C61K clients and no issues. I've never been big on the clients but at this point, I don't think it's worth me changing them out with HR24's. I just wish instead of getting HR24's for HD DVR's, they'd just give HR44's.. Lol

So the picture quality on the HS-17 is no better than the picture quality on the HR54? Isn't the HS-17 supposed to operate faster at least?

With an HS17, you can't have another receiver/dvr, only clients. If the HS17 goes down you can't watch tv. If my HR44 breaks, I can watch my HR24.

It does more, I don't know if I can say its really faster, but its sure not slower. The hr44 isn't slow on its own, so I don't see any real difference. The hr44 is plenty fast IMHO.

Eh, I can say the same though about your argument.. I cant believe someone would avoid a machine that does more and makes certain things a lot better in the off chance in a few years it doesn't work for two days... If it cant do something on a daily basis ok, but otherwise, honestly, I just don't get that. I have streaming and dvds to use if any or all of my sat boxes go down for a day or two. For the record, I have had as many bad dishes (got hit by a tree branch falling) go bad as I have receivers.... Yes one of each, in over ten years. I upgrade often enough that I just don't worry about it, and haven't had any issues.

Directv will give me the HS-17, but I just can't decide if I want it. It's basically four clients compared to having 3 right now with the HR54. I know I would lose PIP, among some other things. I just can't decide

For my family/setup.....Can't take a client camping, take to a Packer tailgate, take to a Race, No client recording space, No HD-DVR's can play with it, No PIP, No AM21(22), limited streams based on # of clients, all receivers dead if server hard drive/fan/motherboard die........No Dice!

No more needed to make my decision........I'm sticking with what I got. :)

What are you concerned about other than pip? And look at the hr54 as a server and client in one, and you already have four clients now. Because that is how it works...

You could take it to a tailgate.. with an hs17. :)

I am a little surprised they aren’t allowing at least h25 with them for that and camping.
