Did I happen to state that my mother is German? Oh, wait, I had not. Now you know.

One word: Photoshop. This is a home which I want to live in and retire in. This means that I am personally inspecting these homes and getting the required code inspections. This is a #allin bet.

As I said before, get a newer house. It will have double-pane vinyl windows, be well insulated, sealed better and have an HVAC system that is 14 SEER or better (although in that climate, more than 17 SEER is wasted money). Plus a newer house means more time before you have to start replacing items (AC, water heater, roof, etc.).

One of my concerns is being able to establish and prove residency in Texas for tax purposes. How does that all work out? The current battle plan is that I stay in a extended stay hotel for a month while the sale of my home is finalized.

I will be prepared. I already take zero deductions for Federal/State taxes, thus helping to reduce the tax bill on April 15th. This will be a split move, as my mom will be selling our current residence while I'm moving in.

This, btw, got official on Wednesday as I accepted the job offer. Now comes the relocation details. And, I have a few homes in mind. Wheeeeee.....

The GTFOC date is set for January 14th, with arrival in the Dallas area on January 18th.

There is no GoFundMe to help with the moving expenses. Although I am engaged on a major purchase of 40 years of memories and figuring out which mementos to keep and which relics to get rid of.

You might want to seriously consider getting some GOOD non-polarized sunglasses - I had forgotten how BRIGHT the Great Plains are when I moved back in August.

Actually, polarized shades are recommended to block glare and reflections off the 90% of the barren wasteland that is Texas.

Not if you ride a motorcycle ( like I do). I had the oppertunity to talk with a salesman for high-end / sporting sunglasses this summer while I was driving Uber, and their company had done research that the polarizing made it difficult for motorcycle riders to see oil spots / slicks on the road

Mine accidently got packed by our packers / movers, so I had to use clipons for the drive out here. It took me the better part of 2 months to finally find them again. Transitions don't work too well in cars anymore - since they started putting UV protection in the windows.

Movers are worth their weight in gold. However - for the packers - be prepared for a shoddy / nonexistent / not helpful listing of what's in each box.

Unknown to most consumers is that the chance of theft and pilferage is greater if movers pack your goods. Moving companies often hire unscreened day laborers.

In the 70s, we got ripped off on an employer-paid move by Mayflower movers, with exactly $0 reimbursement for a missing coin collection. Never again -- live and learn!

We have been fortunate. Five coast-to-coast employer-paid moves with packers each time -- no theft, no broken items. Of course that last move to California was in 1970.
