Well, it DID lock up the other day and not record a whole day's worth of scheduled programs.

But so did the R22-100 occasionally. ;)

If they didn't think people would use composite or s-video, what DID they think we would use? SD only TVs don't have HDMI, and the component connection wasn't much better than composite or s-video when I was experimenting last night. On my SD TV, the R15 (that the R22 replaced) used to be connected via the RF modulated connection. Since that wasn't an option for the R22, I unplugged my DVD player from the composite connection on the TV and used that to connect the R22. My TV didn't have any other options. (Speaking of old SD TVs and their lack of connections, the 27" TV in my bedroom ONLY has an RF-modulated connection. Composite isn't even a choice on that TV).

In any case, based on my experimentation, I agree that composite & s-video is inferior on this box when compared with the R15. And, in case it makes any difference, mine behaved the same as yours on initial startup: it identified itself as an HR21-100. That designation stayed until the first field trial software update. I had originally assumed that all of the field trial units did that--don't know if that is actually the case or not.

My experiences are an exact mirror of what you have described above.

Hey, I'm happy for me!! :D

I was never a big Samsung fan...and had good luck with RCA TV sets (even after they became Thompson Consumer Products using the RCA name) and RCA DirecTV receivers. But the R15-100 also gets a lot of bad press in the regular forums (runs hot, locks up, makes a lot of noise, etc.). I was actually disappointed with my R22-100 and would have been really irked if I was a "regular" DirecTV customer and had gotten it to replace an R15 for SD service. It might be a GREAT box in it's HR21-100 mode. But mine in R22 mode sure wasn't.

Of course, it was really "pushed out the door" in an HR21-100 case, so who knows how the production units are working out. Maybe they are great!
