Google had that study a while back on hard drive lifetimes. It seems if they don't die within the first few months to a year, they're generally rock solid for a long time, after which they fail at the "normal" rate.

However, there was also a bit to the study that said that the likelihood of a drive failing after one SMART error was VERY high, such that as soon as you get a SMART error, you have a very short window of time during which you should replace the drive before it fails.

Any idea if the DVRs can detect and report SMART errors? It would be interesting to keep track of them.

There is SMART testing in the diagnostic menu. Restart your IRD then hit select on the blue screen that says "running receiver self test".

I just checked my three EVDS HDDs this morning (just for you, Tom) and the "rumble" seems to have diminished greatly. Don't have any idea why, but it's hardly noticeable now.

Nope. Nothing has changed. Maybe D* tweaked something. Who knows why these things do what they do? I sure don't.
