NBCUniversal to Shut Down Sports Network NBCSN at End of 2021 - Variety

NBCUniversal will shutter its NBCSN sports network, and move some of its top sports properties to the USA network in a maneuver executives believe will boost the economics of the general-entertainment cable outlet at a time when new streaming-video hubs are luring bigger audiences. The decision could also push some sports fans to the streaming-video hub Peacock, which has begun to test new kinds of sports-programming opportunities.

NBCU’s top sports properties include Nascar racing, National Hockey League contests and English Premier League football. USA is not going to become an all-sports network, this person cautioned, but might function more like WarnerMedia’s TNT, which has built a durable franchise out of its rights to air National Basketball Association games, does for that media company. It remained unclear whether the move would affect NBC Sports employees; the division recently experienced staffing cuts as part of a restructuring at NBCUniversal as it grapples with the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic.

USA Network will inherit most of its programming.

and USA will need an alt / blackout / reverse mirror feed.
And will they have more NHL playoff games on NBC?
NBC to lose the NHL in 2022?

Hopefully they don't ultimately move it to Peacock.

yeah, most likely they are losing it to either ESPN for ESPN+ to gain more NHL content or Fox Sports for FS1/FS2 to get leverage for the 2 sports networks.

    I'd doubt it.

How about alternate channels for commercial establishments only?

NHL Hockey needs to go back to being on ESPN and the occasional game on ABC.

'At the beginning of the pandemic NBCSN was in around 80 million homes and had a sub fee a bit above $.40, meaning it was making NBC ~$400 million annually before advertising is taken into account'
That is what NBC are walking away from. It was also the No2 ranked sports channel in 2020 after ESPN. Beggars belief.
Could they not air sports simultaneously on NBCSN and Peacock. Best if both worlds like they do in the UK? Streaming and cable covered.

I presume nothing will replace this channel on satellite/cable? I know cable is on the way out but this channel slot is still in 80 million homes?

NASCAR: contract runs through 24, contract prohibits races being internet exclusives or behind internet paywalls. Long term the self-inflicted wounds that NASCAR management has done to the sport have collapsed the ratings, Fox is rumored to want out. Will be interesting.
Euro soccer: don't know, don't care.
NHL: contract runs out after this season, ESPN is reportedly interested.
Indy: contract runs out after this season

I don't think the NHL will want games on an internet exclusives service and may want them in commercial establishments!

The stuff on ESPN+ can't legally be shown by bars/restaurants. As you say they still offer UFC as a PPV on Directv (and maybe other services) for commercial accounts to get those, but everything else on ESPN+ is unavailable unless/until ESPN offers some legal way for that.

It will be the same for the NBCSN stuff that moves to Peacock.
