I am thinking of adding 4K service since I have 3 Directv approved Samsung 4K tv’s and was wondering if anyone could provide any suggestions?
Is there any price increase if I already have a Genie and two mini clients for HD? I know I’ll have to switch out equipment but can I get the new equipment for free by committing to a new two year contract?
Any information you can offer is greatly appreciated and yes I know there is not a ton of 4K content on Directv.

For 4K service you'll need either a HR54 or a HS17. The HR54 has a 1 TB Hard Drive. It can be connected to a TV. It works with receivers, DVRs and clients. For 4K service it needs to be connected to a C61K-700 client. It works with one C61K-700 client at once. The HS17 is a headless server. It has a 2 TB Hard Drive. It cannot be connected to a TV and only works with clients. It needs a C61K-700 client for 4K service. It works with two C61K-700 clients at once.

Wanted to add that the HS17 does not support the LCC.

Had it and dumped it. Kinda oversold for what you get.

Also - the HR54 and each client generates a $7 TV charge on your bill (the first one is free).

The HS17 does not generate a $7 charge at all.

So, your total 'TV' charge will be the same regardless of which one you choose.

No....3 4k tvs wouldnt even work on the HR54, and the HR doesnt even output 4k.....The HS 17 is his real only choice.

You’ll want the HS17 and 3 C61K’s. The installer will swap out the lnb. Your monthly bill will be the same. The installation will be free also.

You are correct about the 3 4K TVs situation - I didn't read the OP close enough (3 4K TVs). I stand corrected.

Well you could have 3 C61K's running from an HR54 but it can only do 4K on one of the three at a time. The HS17 can do 4K on only two of the three at a time.

But the HR54 solution would cost him another $7 a month.

Yes that is true if he wants a C61K on all 3 of his TV's. Definitely the better option is the HS17 if he only has 3 TV's total and wants the ability to watch 4K on all three (but not all 3 at the same time)

All the Current Suggestions are are Correct - How you go is -How you intend to view 4K Service in the other locations - The HR54 will NOT direct output 4K over HDMI connected to any TV. C61K is only D*receiver to output 4K HDMI - Not Much 4k Content all the time so Viewing 4K content Will depend on Where you are watching it most in your home.

The HS17- Will Support 2 C61KS at the same time in 2 Different Locations - Anyway Since 4K will be a D* upgrade I suggest you call and they will also change out your LNB - to a NEW RB - Either way if you DO it your self and Activate any NEW receiver - You in a New 2 yr Commit anyway.

Just to clarify that point, you can have all three C61K's on at the same time, but only two can be viewing 4K content.

I mentioned having three 4K TVs but realized after posting that my wife wants a wireless mini and my kids are too young to watch most of the 4K content; plus they watch mostly Netflix. I guess I would really only need one 4K box unless I wanted a backup?

See above about differences between HR54 and HS17...some of them showstoppers like no LCC for HS17 or only one UHD stream from HR54 ...

Take all the nuances into your account/desire/future use and select just one of two models.

    Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
I finally have a deal after being on the phone for one hour and eight minutes while the system struggled to apply all the discounts.
I was given the following equipment for free with a $49 installation fee and new 2 year contract:

One HS -17 aka Genie 2
    Two C61k mini’s aka 2 4K Genie minis
    One wireless Genie mini

Install is next Friday and hopefully it all goes well.

Like what? I've been on the fence for exactly this reason. What are the 4K offerings? Is it mostly sports?

Pay per view movies and 2 part time sports channels. Also 1 full time 4K channel that has concerts, documentaries, etc.

And that’s it? Wow it doesn’t seem to be worth it for the hoops you need to jump through to get it. Do you have it? If so,would you miss it if you didn’t?
