On Monday I called Directv to cancel service after 20 years. The rep told me I would receive a box to return one receiver via FedEx and an email with instructions. I have not received email or box. Should I call back, or does it normally take longer than 5 days?

I think the actual New method is that the email is instructions for you to take the box to the Fed-X location and give it to them. They then scan it and pack it and send it back. The last 1 I did was done that way.

I would definitely give them a call.

You can also return the boxes using UPS. Same thing applies. Don't need labels, the shipper does it all. I did need my account number when I went to the UPS store.

You should have received the email by now. Is your system still activated? If 'no', I'd call them back or use the Chat to get your instructions.

First time I tried to return a box I got nothing from ATT. Calling them just muddied the waters a bit more. Hope things are better now.

I did receive box today via FedEx. The return label is for shipping my HR24-700 back via USPS.

This is amazing. Glad it worked out well. Be nice to see some consistency from ATT.

Maybe not so amazing. Now i got a letter that states they want both my H24-700 and my HR21-700. They letter arrived 3 days after the box. I already used the box to ship my H24-700.
I guess I'll take my HR21-700 to my local UPS store and try to ship it using my AT&T account number. I didn't think AT&T wanted the old HR21 models returned.

Must be worth something or they wouldn't bother. Or they're dumb. You should have no problems with the UPS store. You will need your account number and make sure you keep the receipt.

Well that complicates me canceling if they're going to want the HR20 and HR22.

Crazy. When I canceled in 2017 they did not want my HS17 or HR44. They only wanted my C41W clients. My HR22 and HR20 were recycled years ago by Best Buy per DirecTV instructions when I upgraded.

I don't know why everyone is surprised. Hundreds of posts here on how the information from the CSRs is often wrong. Why should returning equipment information be more accurate?

They asked back for two dead HR-20 about two years ago. No box arrived so I just threw them in the garage. About a year later during a CSR conversation she said my account showed they had not received the units. I said fine send me a shipping label. She says hold a sec let me verify. She comes back and says they don’t want them but could I please mail in the cards. Well I never got around to it and they had already wiped them off the system. I really don’t have time for DTV games. They have no clue what they want from what they don’t want.

All these years, all the HRs I've returned and not one access card have I returned. Not one problem.

It kind of confirms my theory that they really don’t want back anything older than an HR24. The newer CSRs just read from an outdated procedure manual.

What's the point of keeping the access card? It's useless. It married to the receiver and DirecTV doesn't let you swap them to a new box. They never have.

I just dropped my HR24 off at the UPS store. Kept the remote for my HR54. I'm not going to waste my time, materials or money packing it. Go the UPS store, drop it off, they scan it in right then and there and its off your account. What they do with it then is not my problem.

Maybe at the time they were worried that someone out there might be buying them up on eBay to start trying numerous procedures to find a weakness again.
Who knows! They seemed to have dropped that policy since ATT took control.

i took my HR21-700 to UPS store on Friday. The clerk didn't even ask for my account number, just my last name. She scanned the DVR, and my entire account information appeared. She printed off a sheet and told me to keep it for a year. Hopefully, that's the end of it. I'm been a Directv customer for 22 years and been very satisfied. I just don't watch enough television anymore to justify the cost.
