So I already had 2 hd-dvr's. I have had Directv for a little over 3 years. My original DVR was a HR21/100 then about 2 years ago I added a second dvr and they gave me a HR22/100. I liked the HR22 much better mainly because of the larger hard drive 500gb vs. 320gb. Now Directv offered me a free upgrade to another new DVR. Wanting one of the new HR24's I agreed and set up an upgrade to the swm system and whole home dvr. The csr said I should get the hr24. Well Sunday they came to do my installation and the tech gave me an HR21/700. That model is as old as my original dvr from over 3 years ago, and I can't imagine it is even new. I am really upset because this also has the smaller hard drive. Do I have a right to be mad and do you think Directv will give me a newer model if I complain? The tech said he has heard of them but never even seen a HR24 and there is no difference in the 21 and 24. This seems more like a downgrade rather than an upgrade. Thanks.

In your quote "The CSR said I should get the HR24.", you should have paid more attention to the word SHOULD. The HR24s are on Backorder and in short supply and a CSR can Never Guarantee you a particular model as it is always up to the Installer and what they have on hand.

I bought an Owned HR24-500 on Ebay so I would know what I was getting and that is would be Owned which I verified by calling Directv with the RID #. Or you can buy one at Solidsignal.com.

If I can't get a HR24 I would at least expect a 22 or 23 with the 500GB hard drive not a used 4 year old model, or I would be willing to wait on the 24's

And that HR21 might be a refurbished model with an old Power Supply Unit in it that could go bad at any time since they normally only lasts 4 to 5 years and then they start bulging and their capacitors wear out.

Call them up and Politely Complain and ask to talk to a Case Management Rep and see what they can do.

In case you need a little more to feel mad about, don't forget you're now under a new 2 year comittment for that "upgraded" DVR. :)

HAH! and to the OP, if you want something done right you gotta do it yourself. Go to a place like Solid Signal where they can guarantee what receiver you get. The HR24 is way too sweet to except that older model as an equal replacement.

    Free upgrade = HR21

    $199 upgrade = HR24

Under DirecTV rules, you can get any old receiver that guarantees the FUNCTIONALITY of what you ordered, i.e., you asked for a HD DVR, they gave you a HD DVR.

It doesn't have to be as new, or newer, than what you have.

If you want total control over the process, have them mail the receiver or "buy" it online.

if you order from solid signal, do you get an access card and a box ready to activate by simply inputting the order # like when you order from directv? OR, do you have to wait to get it, call directv, get access card, wait 3 days for it to arrive, call back and activate?

The Access Card comes with the HR24-500 from solidsignal.com so all you have to do is call Directv to have them Activate the unit.

I know you're new to DBSTalk, but I'll ask you the same thing I ask everyone that breaches this subject; how did you hear about the HR24? Generally if you know enough to know that the HR24 exists, then you've likely visited a forum discussing D*.

A little extra searching would yield a multititude of threads discussing D*'s policies, and it's almost impossible to miss the fact that D* will not guarantee a particular model...

I am thinking about going to Direct from Time Warner cable. If I order service and request the HR24 and they show up with something other than that. Can I turn them away and not be billed?

You could, but if you try to order service again you might get told that you cannot get it then. If you want to guarantee getting an HR24, you need to order through a retailer like Solid Signal or use a local installer. Most local installers can still offer you the same deals that you can get directly from DirecTV.

I got a HR22-100 replacement today for my old HR21-700. It doesn't have the glossy black finish to match the AM21! :( But I didn't realize it has a bigger hard drive, that will be nice.
