Directv inserts a full color flyer every so often in the paper and in this mornings its lists new HD. Inside bottom it has listed -

MSNBC
HLN
CSPAN 1 & 2
Travel
GOLTV

They are all listed among others we already have. No mention of when they start.

Yeah and its all Swanni's fault.
Well, Swanni sucks, but this is DirecTVs fault. They are not giving a consistent, concise message. For whatever reason, they are completely glossing over a major addition of new HD channels that is supposedly upcoming. This causes people to fear it is not really coming.

HOpefully in a couple of months we will look back and realize ther ewas nothign to worry about and we will all be happy with a true HD leader.

The sad part is that there is no way to have D* answer ANY questions about possible/probable future channels. There is no major consumer company that is as unresponsive to customers as D* .

Of course, the fanboys will disagree and be critical, as they always do, to any comment that in any way could possibly be perceived as maybe being critical about D*. What flavor was that kool-Aid?

I'll disagree, but try not to be critical. I think the difference is the semi-public nature of the satellite launch process that makes this frustrating and highlights the unresponsiveness. We've all been following D-12 for years with bated breath as it goes through its process of being built, launched, moved, tested, etc. So, we know something is coming, we just don't know what, which is frustrating.

On the other hand, most other companies can do product development in secret and its only when the widget hits the shelf that we even know that they were developing it. You give a good example... what flavors are Kool-Aid developing and when will they hit the market?

Want a company that's REALLY tight-lipped about future plans? Try Apple.

I disagree. Name a company that does go out and tell you when a bunch of channels are going to be added, and what channels. I know that Comcast sure as heck doesn't. I had their HD service for years and was constantly promised they would be adding more channels "soon", but never told which ones or when. The few times they did add a couple channels they just showed up in the guide, and then a week or two later I would get something in the mail saying they had been added. I was never told in advance when they would show up.

Finally 2 years ago I had enough and dropped them for D*. My HD channel count quadrupled, and the quality of the DVRs and video was much better. A couple months later Comcast finally added a bunch of HD in my area, but it's still only about half of what I get with D*.

DirecTV handles these announcement in pretty much the same way as:

Comcast Corporation
Dish Network Corporation
Time Warner Cable, Inc.
Cox Communications, Inc.
Charter Communications, Inc.
Cablevision Systems Corporation
Verizon Communications, Inc.
Bright House Networks LLC
AT&T, Inc.
Mediacom Communications Corporation
Suddenlink Communications
Insight Communications Company, Inc.
CableOne, Inc.
RCN Corp.
WideOpenWest Networks, LLC
Bresnan Communications
Service Electric Cable TV Incorporated
Atlantic Broadband Group, LLC
Armstrong Cable Services
Knology Holdings
Midcontinent Communications
MetroCast Cablevision
Blue Ridge Communications
Broadstripe

(otherwise known as the top 25 providers in the country)

You typically don't see a provider announcing new channel additions too far in advance. You may see announcements from providers a few days to a week prior to additions. Many things can happen. Deals can fall through, technical issues can arise, etc. It's better to let customers know when the light is fully green rather than promising them something and then not being able to deliver.

The lack of specific information (dates/channels) is normal rather than abnormal. Regardless, Satelliteracer has already given us information about what we can expect.

99% "mostly" satisfied means 100% will have something to complain about!
Well, I won't complain...as long as I get [insert channels here] in HD!! Otherwise, I'll rant and rave and talk about leaving. I'll say that I am calling [insert provider here] to shcedule my install because they have [insert channels here] in HD and offer [insert long requested feature here]. I won't actually ever leave, though. You know, because there really isn't anything better out there. But that won't stop me from voicing my severe disapproval of the lack of [insert channel here] in HD. And don't even get me started on the [insert hot topic here] fee!!

We all knew about new generation Iphone, and Ipad developements LONG before they hit the shelf. You've heard about Ipad haven't you and it hasn't been released to the customer yet. Apple believes in keeping customers informed; D* does NOT.
 Maybe it is just you. The rest of us are rather well informed.

I know about D12. Don't you think D* has agreements with new HD channels which will start when D12 lights up? (or those which will start on D11 when D12 starts)?

Do you think D* will wait until then to start negotiating? I don't. Some channels are "in the can" now. Prove me wrong.

Since contracts have been signed, (and must be before assigning them to a channel), D* should inform their customers but they refuse. :bang:bang:bang

That is the one thing that has always bugged me about DIRECTV. I fully agree, many channels are now signed and "in the can". Why not have a "coming soon" page on DIRECTV? This would lure in new customers too. I just don't get it, what's the risk?

And what happens if they announce a bunch of channels to go live on April 1st, and D12 were to be lost/damaged while moving from 76° to 103°? People would be flipping out even worse then they are right now.

I agree 100%. I can't see any harm in being a little more straight forward, at least something like "30 new national HD channels in the 1st half" , no need to mention which ones yet. What we have so far is a lot of PPV/Directv Cinema and other stuff we need to pay for.

I do believe in free market, though. If Directv doesn't deliver, the competition will do.

DIRECTV already announced that they "NOW" have the capacity for 200 channels. I like your reasoning. However, this is not the case. Clearly DIRECTV is not afraid to take a risk. We all know they "NOW" do "NOT" have the capacity for 200 channels. They will soon, but not today. Plus, we all know DIRECTV loves disclaimers. Simply add a disclaimer on the coming soon page.

And what happens if they can't launch the 400 PPV/Cinema that was promised to the investors ? What's the difference ?

Yep we mentioned that 200+ risk comment before but nobody responded back.

I agree. I understand totally that DIrecTV can;t come out and say we have channels coming on this date. However, with past investor calls and commercials saying they did have channels coming and recent investor calls not mentioning it at all, I can only hope they know it is a done deal and are not mentioning it in forward looking statements anymore and not that they have changed course. In all honesty, it would not kill the CEO to mention more HD coming in the same sentence as the PPV, that way no one has any reason to worry.

I knew I would hear from the kool-aid drinkers about my post. If you are well informed, as you state, tell me/us what new channels will start when d12 is turned on.:sure::sure::sure:
I'm a Coke drinker, can't stand Kool Aid, but the insert in my latest DirecTV bill explicitly says "The launch of DirecTV's new satellite means additional premium channels in HD." which Satracer said as well a month ago.

They also said at a conference yesterday that they'll have "up to" 70 new national HD channels this year:

DirecTV 2010 Credit Suisse Global Media & Communications Convergence Conference Presentation Page 6

If you want specific dates, get an executive position at DirecTV, sorry but none of us will be able to tell you that.
