I found a brand new in the sealed box hr23-700 at an installer that is going out of business. I am thinking of adding it to my current setup but will this be a lease if it was never activated or will it be owned? I am already in my 2yr contract with a few hr24s.

New receivers can only be activated as owned if sold directly by DirecTV to you (aside from HR21 Pros).

Not what I wanted to hear but thanks. It was 80 which seemed like a deal but for a lease that is no deal.

$80 is a deal seeing that they are $199 anywhere else. Hmmmmm; your logic is somewhat flawed.....

Call D* and talk to the access card distribution team. I would suggest not mentioning the back story, simply tell them you are thinking about buying a receiver and want to check the receiver ID.

If it doesn't show up in the system (i.e. brand new, never activated), it will *most likely* activate as a lease. They will be able to tell you for sure either way, you just need the RID.

$80 with no contract re-up would be a deal.

Adding or upgrading will fetch a commitment extension.

I would jump on that deal if I knew where to get it. I have no real options for anything but D* and am happy with them anyway, so 2 year extensions mean nothing to me.

i ended up buying an HR24-500 and HR23-700 for $180. I thought that directv would let me sell my HR20 that I have owned for several years but they say it is still leased. I guess I am going to replace it with the HR24 anyways so I can get rid of the convoluted MRV setup.

Cool. Are the ones you bought owned or leased?
