Well.... Just drove by the guys house and there is a installer putting up a Dish Network dish....

Haven't talked to him to find out the details but it looks like one less DirecTV sub - caused by poor hardware performance....:(

Once I talk to him and post back what happened.

They only become truly helpful prior to being a customer... Then after your third world material. As for Dish, I would say go for it... But this a game of Russian roulette. What looks good today, will look greener on the other side down the road. Hard decision, just weigh all the facts and don't look back or it will drive you crazy.

HR44 with H25's is awesome. Fast, perfect.

I believe you but he would of had to send his 3 clients back that were installed a month ago and then pay $300 for H25s to get there.

Lesson learned I guess - if he would have seen the clients in action before his install I'm sure he would have done things differently.

Talked with my neighbor yesterday…. Just to sum it up…

His DirecTV deal did in fact include Sunday ticket but after talking to DirecTV and weighing his options he decided to take Dish Networks ‘come back’ offer and go with the ‘hopper’.

DirecTV wouldn’t budge on making him pay $100 each to replace the clients. He said he could have probably gotten over the speed difference between the clients and his old Dish Network receivers but the inability to reliably use fast forward and what he called the ‘run away’ remote was just too much.

He told DirecTV that he couldn’t understand how anyone uses the clients on a regular basis. The DirecTV rep told him they were ‘aware’ of some issues and they were being worked out.

He said so far he is happy with the Hopper and the speed difference is amazing. He would like to have the 5 tuners of the Genie but it wasn’t worth troubles of the clients.

Clients aren't so good for channel flippers. But for ease of use and continuity with the receiver (34 or 44), they are just fine.

I realized my viewing habits differ from those who feel they have become speed-deprived, which I seldom feel: I open the Guide, select a few shows that aren't already in an SL or already set to R, then hit List and watch from there. Of concern to me is FF, 30 Skip and the danged Progress Bar.

I'm wondering if the solution to the slow clients issue isn't just time. After my initial shock at the sorry performance, I left the client dormant for a few days. I think the software has been upgraded once or twice already since installation because now everything works except fast forward and the 30 slip.

Can the Genie and client be changed from slip to skip? That might work better for the client since it just skips directly ahead.

Software updates have helped my clients.
You can set 30skip the same as with the DVRs, which I have done and works well. I don't FF or RR for anything but skip to ticks, so haven't had a problem with it.

The clients do seem to "perk up" a bit after being on for a while, but start up and initial use does lag more than non clients.

Excellent! I'll try that and see if it improves skipping through commercials. I'm your opposite: I never use the hash marks, I only want to go through the commercial breaks quickly.
