The newspaper insert we were all talking a month ago that said D* now had 200 HD channels was changed. In our Sunday paper, the same ad was inserted but the channel number for HD channels says "130". The rest of the ad is the same.. still lists HLN HD, etc. as HD channels.

My newspaper has the insert that says capacity for 200 HD channels with the promotional items expiring 6/30/2010. So there is obviously a rotating advertisement program that uses both flyers

Well, both DirecTV and Dish were suing each other alleging misleading marketing and a few weeks back they both agreed to drop their suits, so its possible this is a result of that. They also may just be running various copy at various times and places. Only the DireCTV marketing people know for sure.

Apparently there are still a few folks that don't read everything thoroughly....the 5 highlighted words clearly state something specific very specific. Capacity for and activation of are two entirely different things.

The most recent flyers have been designed to be more specific as to active channels.

This has been discussed at nauseum in other threads here.

They were getting too much flak for advertising capacity and making it sound like they had 200 channels coming soon. They may have the capacity but they are not putting up 200 channels any time in the near future. Unless they do it like Dish did it and call each PPV movie a channel.

I noticed the Dish man on the street commercials no longer say, "Same TV or less", now they only say, "Why pay more for TV?" I wonder if the suit settlement had something to do with that as well?

That might have to do with DirecTV's new ad where they compare the basic packages of Dish and DirecTV. In it they show how the basic package of Dish, while cheaper, contains less channels then the basic package from DirecTV.

It also might have something to do with DIRECTV's desire to be clear in what they state in the light of Dish's claim of 200 channels (which turned out to be, ahem, optimistic.)

I guess "Truth in Advertising" is just a bad saying not a law.
