It’s time to allow Satellite Subscribers the option to subscribe to distant network channels. I have been without ABC now for going on 7 weeks because of the Nexstar dispute. I cannot use an over the air antenna to get my locals because they come from Memphis Tennessee and It is 80 Miles from where I live. Yes it’s that far. My area is the farthest place east that Memphis serves and we cannot pick up any locals over the air from Memphis at 80 miles away. They are just simply too far away.

This was discussed in Congress several years ago, but never went anywhere. Allowing TV providers to deliver an out-of-area station during these disputes would nip them in the bud very quickly!

It’s getting ridiculous these contract disputes. These TV stations they are free over the air so why are they charging DIRECTV & other TV Providers for the redistribution? I think they are gouging.

I'm hoping by the time the College Football Season starts (Aug. 31) there is a deal reached. Have a feeling it won't happen until most of the new Fall season shows start back up though.

My local ABC station is what I'm missing and the over-the-air signal is very spotty for me. Don't trust it all.

These same negotiations are going on now as that bill is up for renewal at the end of the year. I am sure they will have 1-2- more hearings on it before then. The first was good. It was in early June so before this dispute came up. This is a good one. Affecting NFL games. I almost venture to say that Nexstar will swallow its pride before the NFL season starts. They seem content so far but lets see how far they are really prepared to go. I lost a NBC Affiliate in this but screw Nexstar. They have always been terrible.

If you go back far enough, into the early days of C-Band and when DirecTV first launched, when you could get distants by just lying about your ability to get locals, a significant number of people could not care less about if W-whatever-whatever-whatever in Whateverville is their local CBS or if they get WCBS. All they want is access to the CBS shows. The local material is mostly worthless.

Put another way, add up the local news ratings (generally the only locally produced programming) of all local stations combined, and in most markets you find that 75% of people don't care about it.

Some people will care about it for the NFL if they're a fan of the local team. But other than NFL, news and weather alerts, it doesn't matter if you get your local CBS station or the one in NYC.

We're forced to watch, and pay for, only our local affiliates, then we're forced to do without, and still pay for, only our local affiliates when it's decided to take them down. It's a great scam if you can get in on it.

I would say forced is a strong word. You can call and get the package without the locals for like what $4-5 cheaper. They told me I would be getting a discount for the missing channel however I dont see it on the new bill though. I am not happy with missing my NBC affiliate either but Nexstar needs taught a lesson so fine with me.

You worded it the best I have ever seen described. We are forced to only get our locals. And as for the poster who said back in the day when we could just lie about not being able to receive any locals. There are truly some like me who cannot receive any locals from their market over the air. My locals are Memphis Tennessee & I live 80 miles (the farthest county away) that is served by Memphis & an Antenna even an outdoor antenna does me absolutely no good. I have an antenna that has been sitting collecting dust because it is no good. I cannot pick up anything on it. It’s ridiculous that people with Satellite Service can’t subscribe to the major networks from either New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles. Congress should allow this to happen. Like me I live in the Central Time Zone. They should allow you to subscribe to distant networks according to what time zone you live in if you are willing to pay $6 or $7 a month for them. For example New York is the East Coast Distant Service. I wouldn’t want the New York Locals & I darn sure don’t need to get L.A. since I am more than 2,000 miles from there. Why can’t they make Chicago Be a Distant Network for people who live in the Central Time zone. It only would make sense. And for christs sake let us make the choice to subscribe to them in addition to our local market so we have a backup network service when our locals are taken off the air.

and let people have an part NFL ticket at big discount? The locals don't want that as they want to force the hand with the fees.

The idea of "having a back up" to local networks is never going to happen. Fact is Big Media gets what it wants, and what it wants is for the 20-odd local station companies to be paid big $$, keeping some and passing the rest along to the really Big Media networks. These companies stand between you and the network programming you want. A pointless and useless middleman that adds nothing of value to the transaction.

This is the government's fault. Congress over-ruled Fortnightly.

Of course, local TV should be free.

Not for many people. Not everybody lives in town.

Every person, no matter where they live, should be entitled to receive the most local affiliate of each network. Without charge.

So if I moved to the The Aleutian Islands I should get free 'local' TV? Who would provide that to me?

Why should they be entitled to have it delivered to them via cable or satellite? It isn't going to be "without charge" unless I can order a $0 locals only package from my cable company or Directv with free equipment.

Copyright law is what it is, if you don't like it talk to your congressman about getting it changed. Good luck, it gets extended every time Mickey Mouse is about to go out of copyright, so unless you have deeper pockets than Disney your congressman won't help :)
