12 a week doesn't seem like very much to me .... they should be able to get there with just the RSNs they have now right?

Ronnie (the other rep who returned my call) ALSO called me back today- after Aaron did. He stated that D* is NOT yet negotiating a new contract w/ NHLCI. (This is opposite what Aaron had just told me...Grrrr.) :bang

He was honest in stating that D* knows of the problems but is basically just "fact-finding" right now and there is no definite re-negotiation going on. He did state that it IS a bandwith issue (which should be resolved w/ the new satellite) AND it is currently not a high priority- but getting out more and more HD channels is the priority. He said he'd mention my complaints to the Head of Programming... yadyadayada.

He was very nice and did sound knowledgable about his lack of knowledge.

(I also did get a credit for partial season of NHLCI.) Keep the emails coming!

I got the impression that they were caught off guard by the number of e-mails complaining about the number of HD games. 12 games a week is a very small percentage of Hd games in a week.

I even asked why the HD rights were not negotiated in the new NHL contract. They said they couldn't talk about contracts.

I asked why the HD feed of a RSN was blacked out and why couldn't they just use that feed. They said they were working on getting the rights to use those feeds.

It's like someone said way earlier in this thread. It is as if they are surprised that

    a, the NHL exists
b, the season has already started

How in the hell can it be a bandwidth issue? They broadcast 14 HD NFL games every Sunday (including 7 -10 at the same time), yet they can't handle one or two a night in Center Ice? I'm sorry, this makes no sense at all.

It would all depend on what their contract with the NHL states. Each provider has their own contract with the NHL, I am sure they all state different restrictions as to what they can and can't show. The NHL supplies the feeds to D*, E* and cable.

You got to realize that not all networks have HD yet. The FSN HD schedule for next week, the 21st to the 27th shows a total of 13 games in HD, if we had 12 of them, that wouldn't be to bad at all. DISH has only 2 of them scheduled for their CI package for that time period.

If they could show HD hockey from the RSNs they already have, I'd be happy.

But they BLACK OUT HD telecasts for no apparent reason.

That's not true. According to their website, Dish has 12 games between now and the 21st. I seriously doubt they will have only two games in the time period you are looking at.

That is true, but I see the schedule they have only goes to the 21st, that is why I only saw 2 posted. I was thinking it was for the entire month of October. A second glance showed me it was only until the 21st.

Same here... I've written and emailed many times. Most of the time, I get a canned email from a CSR each time.

Why can't D* use the bandwidth for NHL CI HD games during the week that D* uses on Sunday afternoons for NFL Sunday Ticket? I don't believe this bandwidth is used elsewhere from Monday to Friday night? We used to not get HD baseball via Extra Innings on Sundays in Sept because it was being used for NFL Sunday Ticket... do it in reverse during the week for NHL CI customers, if indeed bandwidth is an issue currently.

With many RSNs now doing either full HD or part time (game only) HD broadcasts and if D* is already offering the HD feed (in the 600s), I also don't understand why these HD games have to be blacked out if the same is in SD via NHL CI. Bandwidth shouldn't be an issue here since the HD RSN is normally on in the 600s..simply remap it to the HD NHL CI channel in the 700s.

Thanks for letting me know - I appreciate it. Just wanted to make sure it was DirecTV's fault and not on my end. I noticed the sync issue went away once the post-game started... little late though.

I agree - the upconverted broadcast looks quite a bit better than SD. Much more watchable.

lol, no kidding. DirecTV still doesn't have a clue about the NHL. They seriously need to hire someone with strong knowledge about hockey.

What I don't understand are the darn blackout rules. I only really care about my local team (Coyotes). I have season tickets so I go to all the home games but would like to see the away games. But according to the D* website it appears all games with a local team are blacked out. WTF!

Then there's the whole HD thing.

Currently the way D* has done it the last few years, if your local RSN broadcasts the game, you can see it, regardless of where it is. If the Coyotes are playing the Kings, you will get the the game on your local RSN. You may get the game from the Kings RSN, if your local RSN is not covering the game. Like tonight, I am in the Panthers area, we have no local RSN telecast of the game, so we can see it on TSN, the Canadians telecast of the game. If we had local coverage, I would be blacked out of the TSN telecast.

I suspect that the bandwidth issue isn't on D* end, but on Fox end. I have seen repeated postings noting that Fox does not have the bandwidth in their main hub to handle all the RSN showing HD at once (seperate place from there Network hub), and maybe they don't have the ability to pipe it all to D* at once either. Fox doesn't spend money to upgrade until after everyone else has so when they do it it will be a) cheaper and b) once they are done upgrading it will give immediate dividends, rather than waiting for others to catch up. Also, all the NHL CI HD and NBA HD and so on will be coming from the D10 (and is just a mapped channel of a RSN that is showing the game not an additional channel using more bandwidth, which is different from how they produce ST), so it has nothing to do with the MPEG-2 bandwidth that is used by ST. Eventually (next year possibly???) ST will be on D10 or D11 and in Mpeg-4 too....

Oh my, looks like DirecTV is using 2 feeds for the Kings/Wild game tonight. :) :)

    766 is FSN West
    767 is FSN North

    Thanks DirecTV!
