I finally got my 4K working so I went to install the external drive I bought and there’s no damn esata port on the back of my HR54-500! It says manufactured November 2018 and appears brand new. Does anyone know of a work around for adding a drive? Here’s a picture of what the back looks like[IMG].

Did this receiver come with a manual ? If yes, what does it show for connections and an external hard drive ?
In the picture, just below the ethernet connection, what does that connection say ? This is the picture on Solid Signal.

Bummer. My HR54-500 has it like it shows above, buy mine was manufactured in September, 2015.

There's one last solution that would work for you though.........

I just checked SS site. I don't see any indication of who makes the 54 in the picture and only 54-700 came up in a search and I think the picture shows a 54-700. Why would the back bulwark of a 500 be laid out differently than a 700? Like Inky, I'd like to see the sticker on that 54 in the picture. The eSATA port should be visible.

They made a change to the HR54 a while back to drop the eSATA port, so newer ones do not have it.

It says usb on the port next to Ethernet. I’ll google and see if I can find a manual. If it came with one, the installer didn’t leave it. [IMG]

Does your 500 have the same lineup of ports on the back wall, in the same sequence? I've always thought that was one thing that stayed the same on all models. That picture is strange...

They also went from USB 2.0 to USB 3.0, so maybe it supports a USB drive instead?

The only other difference I see is it says SWM-5 vs SWM-7 on other HR54s.

The drive does have a USB port on it. Will that work? I emailed dvrdaddy.com to ask them but I don’t expect to hear from them until Monday. The instructions that came with the drive don’t address using the USB port.

Yeah just try it. Worst case it doesn't work, it isn't going to break anything.

I looked on the description on Amazon and it says “customers should be using ESATA cable and not usb cable” so I will wait to hear back from the vendor. Thanks for the replies. I didn’t even notice the USB port on the back of the drive.

I can't believe they killed the eSATA function on the 54s and 17s and haven't provided a way to have an external device on them. But the eSATA function was never supported by D*. If we haven't been notified about this I wouldn't expect the USB devices to work in the same manner.

Wow they are really cutting costs. No esata port, no coax digital audio port and your backplate doesn’t have any of the white silkscreen printing on it to make it easier to read and group ports. It’s just engraved into black plastic... you have to really look to see that black on black engraving. AT&T cheap skates!

Yup. And we know the HDDs in those aren't nearly large enough for a power user. Just another way to bend folks in the way ATT wants them to go.

Interesting that was manufactured in 2018, you’d think they would have upgraded it to output 4K by now.

    I know Slice, I know. :)
