I had to replace a SD reciever and she told me I would have to recommit but it would only be for 18 months. They had gotten rid of the two year commit?

The 2 year commit is only for advanced equipment (DVR, HD, HD-DVR) not SD equip. The commit was 12 months on standard equip but was increased to 18.

igator99, by chance, is your existing unit defective and do you happen to have Directv's Protection Plan?

There seems to be differing opinions as to whether replacing a defective unit covered by the Protection Plan extends the term of the committment. Some think it's very clear that it doe not extend. Others are less certain.

Worth pursuing if the situation warrants.

If you pursue, I'd be interested in knowing what you're told by D*.

    Good luck!

The contract stuff will always bother me. 18 months for a POS standard receiver that probably costs <$50........just another excuse to try to force you to sign a contract.

I got a free HD-DVR last September under the mover's program and my online "Current Setup > My Services" has a "No Annual Commitment" item on it.

Mine says nothing at all in regard to any commitment. Is that where the commitment would show up?

The existing unit is mine I bought it about four years ago. I was surprised to hear I had another 18 month commitment. If you ask me D* has gotten very greedy and if we ever get another choice here besides Charter which is terrible I'm gone.

It is the responsibility of a true DIRECTV apologist to respond with righteous indignation to any obviously misguided attempt to besmirch the reputation of DIRECTV.

Because everyone has a choice in what they choose to use as a carrier, and if all you are going to do is come on and complain about something that is standard in the particular industry then someone is going to call BS. Call E* and see if they will set you up with no commitment, many cable companies have a commitment, many cell phones come with commitments, so to imply that DirecTv is doing something underhanded by requireing a commitment is takken offensively by some people. Bottom line is simple, if it sucks so bad then leave, if you dont then it must not be so bad.

There is NO CONTRACT EXTENSION for any receiver replaced under the protection plan. If someone got hit for an extension call and complain as it was an error (unless something else was involved like some free programming).

The two year contract couldn't possibly have anything to do with it.
