If you were looking forward to watching curling this Olympics you are in for a rude awakening. At least as this morning it was on the Olympic channel 624. A channel I used to get as included with my sports package but no more.

In the past the curling was shown exclusively on one NBC channel and it appears that channel this year will be the Olympic channel 624.

Why this channel was ever moved from the sports package one can only guess. I can't believe the charge back to Direct TV is that great for a mostly obscure channel except for skiing fans. I guess its only another opportunity for a cash grab by Direct TV.

If you do want to watch curling the good news is that it was available on the Olympic mix channel 205 that was broadcasting the Olympic channel 624 in a small box. Just use your cursor to box highlight the channel and you will get audio also. Don't select the channel as you will go to the Olympic channel 624 with a blank screen.

    Shame on you Direct TV.

You're confusing the Olympic Channel that launched in July on channel 624 with the unrelated Universal Sports which shutdown in November 2015 and used to be on channel 625. NBCU didn't even own or operate that channel, they were a minority investor, InterMedia just used the Universal name via a licensing deal.

Take it up with NBCU if you don't like the package placement, they're the ones who wanted regular packages only and not part of a sports pack, and all other providers have it in similar packages that are one or two steps above the package that has USA, NBCSN and CNBC. (i.e. AT 200 and higher on Dish, Preferred and higher on Optimum, Extreme and higher on FiOS, Core and higher on PS Vue, etc)

You might also want to check out the NBC Olympics streaming channel if you have a streaming device. Not only is there many live curling events, but Replays are available.

Thanks for the clarification of the difference between 624 Olympic channel (owned by NBC Universal) and 625 Universal sports (formerly owned by Intermedia).

Still the decision on WHICH general package to include the channel is that of Direct TV.

It has to cost Direct TV peanuts and the decision to place it or other select channels (golf channel at times) on an upgraded package is the usual cash grab that has people opting out of Direct TV for bundling reasons.

I have CHOICE EXTRA CLASSIC with SPORTS PACK and the additional REGIONAL SPORTS FEE (another new grab on top of the sports fee).

And I have to pony up more to get a channel that offers skiing for most of the year just to view NBC's Olympic coverage.

Perhaps this is just another example of customers with older packages being forced off those packages for newer pricing.

Direct TV has always treated existing customers like second class citizens in comparison to new customers.

Hence the need for threads at this site giving tips on how to bargain (threaten to quit) to get some of the basics (like a working receiver less than 10 years old) that new customers receive.

    That's pathetic in my book.

Grandfathered packages do not often get new channels.

Sorry to have to correct you again.

There is no Olympic event coverage on the Olympic Channel.
It's all news, highlights, and medal ceremonies only.

    Olympic Channel Broadcast Schedule

Spend 5 minutes on the NBC website and you'll see you're not missing any event coverage not having the Olympic Channel.
You're only missing Sports Center type programming.

It appears that NBC/NBCSN is not really adhering to the program descriptions in the time slots. In other words, it will show a 3 hour block with curling and something else, yet they put on live snowboarding. Would be nice if they'd sort of designate certain channels to have certain sports.. then viewers would know where to look for a specific sport when its supposed to be played on a certain date. The on-screen red button schedule for Olympic events isn't too helpful either. I spent a long time trying to figure out when snowboard cross would be on.. it is not listed but instead NBC is using 'snowboarding' to classify the different disciplines.

A lot of snowboarding and skiing events got postponed at the last minute this weekend due to the weather and the rescheduled times for the rest of those events weren't finalized for another day or two. So it will be at least another day before the listings services get the updated airing schedule for those events out to providers.

The thing about having sports assigned to specific channels is they have other commitments on certain days. On weekdays CNBC has to air business programming live from the early morning to the late afternoon, while USA has to air WWE programming on Monday and Tuesdays during primetime, so their coverage can't begin until after 11:30pm PT/2:30am ET. Plus with some sports there's events going on at the same time since they don't all use the same venue. Then you got the inevitable weather delays for outdoor events so if something were scheduled for a weekend morning or evening on CNBC, it won't be able to air on CNBC if it gets delayed to a weekday.

They also give priority to things where US athletes make it to the semifinals over things where they were eliminated during the early rounds, something they wouldn't know of in advanced. Especially for the events where the preliminaries and finals happen in one day.

It's not regular winter weather like snowfall that's the problem, it's the heavy winds that made several of the courses unsafe to use for those days. For some they had to delay the events, for others they had to move the starting line to a lower height.
