I have one D11 standard definition receiver that I rarely use. I was wandering if there is a date that DirectTV is going to end their standard definition broadcast which would make this receiver useless. Also if I cancel this receiver would I have to return it to DirectTV? I have 3 high definition receivers that I normally use with a high definition dish.

Directv will probably upgrade it to an HD receiver for free, give them a call and see. That way it will remain useful when they do cut off the SD broadcasts.

I received a letter today stating there is a loss of local channels due to a needed update. I’ll look around this forum to figure out which unit has lost its locals. I’m going to assume it is my D11. I haven’t used it since I’ve converted to a six output lnbf and a Ds switch.

Yes it will be your D11 that lost its locals. Directv would probably offer you a free upgrade to an HD receiver if you want to keep using it.

Channels are slowly being dropped and only broadcast in HD. Your favorite channel could go at any time.

Thank you for your reply. I've received a replacement access card for this receiver. I'm curious to find out if this old standard definition receiver has a life after the change. If it's not to my liking, I will consider an uograde.

The access card won't extend the useful life of the receiver when the real issue is its inability to handle modern signal modulation and video compression schemes.

With the understanding that those letters have been going out for many months now, yes.
