Central Illinois is now up to 7.29 for the rsn. Fun thing is I have had directv for nearly 20 years and have never even tuned to my rsn.

Not sure if the inner/outer ring has a lot to do with it. Here in eastern Iowa, where the nearest professional sports of any kind is at least 200 miles away, the RSN fee is $5.83. The whole state is claimed by six major league baseball teams, maybe that has something to do with it even though we're not close enough to be inner ring pricing.

Even if the Cubs learn the lessons of the Dodgers Channel and don't get too greedy, with the way the increases have been coming, I'll bet we're over $10 by 2020. Eventually the trickle of lost subscribers for cable/satellite companies will become a flood and the providers will push back hard on the sports rights inflation of the past decade.

Preferred Xtra is like Family you have to call in to customer care or use their online chat to have the package added. Preferred Xtra is $85.99/mo regular rate and is essentially the Entertainment package + all non-sports channels from Xtra with El Rey, Boomerang & Chiller added but it does not include FM HD on 386

The Cubs will try to get 7 dollars a month per subscriber when its contract is up for bids in 2020. DirecTv and all the other will take a pass, arguing that the market can't support a Cubs Channel for 7 a month.

The Cubs will then offer an OTT Cubs Channel for 30 dollars a month, with a minimum 12 month commitment.

The Cubs would make way more money offering a RSN for $2/month than they would offering an OTT network for $30/month. The economics of making everyone pay in your market instead of just the superfans are too overwhelming.

If they're dumb enough to ask for $7 each they'll end up without carriage like the Dodgers.

The Dodger's channel can't be compared to what the Cubs are planning, for one thing the Dodger's channel is owned by the local cable company in the LA market(Charter), I haven't heard of any company that wants to give their competitor money on a yearly basis, even if the Dodger's are on the channel. I haven't heard of the Cubs planning to go this route, they want to own the whole thing. I know it's a pipe dream, but I'm kinda hoping the go WGN2.0, I loved when the WGN Superstation showed Cubs day baseball, it's the reason I'm a Cubs fan, I loved coming home from school(in Charlotte, NC) and watching Cubs baseball.

I think a lot of non-Midwest resident Cubs fans were created in the 80s and 90s because of all those games available nationwide on WGN, which was something no other team had. If they handle the new RSN poorly they will eventually start losing those fans, and not be roping in any new ones.

I remember seeing a lot of the Atlanta Braves as well. But I watched more Cubs games than Braves games.

I had trouble with the tool through Firefox for the past week or so ... but can access it through IE if I allow mixed secure and insecure content. For my one RSN area (CSN Chicago) is $5.83.

what about flipping WGN cltv to a mixed news / sports channel with the cubs? That will get picked up by the systems that don't have it now and get Comcast to add it in HD.

    Cltv?
I'm not sure mlb would allow superstations to carry games nationwide now. They get to pry at least $80a year from our pockets now.

Bingo, steveymacjr. WGN's national carriage of the Cubs, Bulls and White Sox continually was grandfathered by MLB and the NBA. Once it ceased, that was it. None of those teams can come back to WGN America or whatever that channel might be called down the road. In a similar vein, that is why no Blackhawks games ever aired on the superstation ... had the beginning of the Hawks/WGN agreement been decades ago, maybe they would have. It began in 2008 or so, and a stipulation was no games could air on the national signal (although they can air all over Canada, they can't air 80 miles from Chicago ...).

Cltv is an local feed not WGNA

Canada and Caribbean systems have the Chicago OTA feed.

Yep, my point exactly, although I do guess there are people that don't know that. Canadian systems reverted to carrying WGN9 about 10 years ago. They have no idea how lucky they are.

the wgn 9 feed has been used for NHL CI (remap?) on the sat systems there in the past and on some systems no black outs even when playing a local team and for the exclusive games on Canadian channels.

I blasted them for charging me even $0.01 for sports. I watch less then zero sports and I don't want to pay extra for the people that do. Let them pay for it if they want it so bad. The one rare time I've ever praised DirecTV was when they came out with Preferred Xtra.

Here's what I find amusing about the whole "Dodgers Channel" thing: Spectrum, Charter, or whatever they're called, are constantly bleating about it being unavailable on other providers. Yet, as Time Warner Cable, several years ago they were asking their customers whether they should "Roll Over or Get Tough" with regard to ever-increasing costs of programming. As ye sow, so shall ye reap.....

I think that's how DirecTV grabs the WGN9 feed to use for Cubs and Sox games on EI (and, I presume, the Bulls and Hawks games shown in LP and CI, respectively). Every WGN9 broadcast shown on EI last year was the true local signal, complete with commercials, promos and station IDs as opposed to the backhaul feed used for the WLS games. For a few weeks in the 2015 season, that was the case for the WGN games. No commercials and a shot of the stadium between innings, but that went away as quickly as it came (I personally prefer watching the local Chicago feed, just like we got when I was growing up in the 80s).
