Over the last 10 days, I have done a comparison of the HR21 operating temperature as reported on the information screen with the AM21 above the HR21 versus the AM21 underneath the HR21.

It may not be a surprise to anyone, but the average temperature of the HR21 has run about 5° F hotter with the AM21 underneath, averaging out to 120° F as compared to 115° F average with the AM21 on top.

All other operating conditions were the same for both.

I have the AM21 on the top. The temp on the HR21 is showing 100 after being on for a couple of hours. The AM21 feels pretty cool.

I am running 120 with the AM21 on top in a glass front audio cabinet.
This is after both have been on for several hours.

guess I'm not a good test for this one.. mine runs 106-109 all the time ;)

Interesting. I'm showing 77F on the system info screen of the HR21, with the AM on top. I didn't have the HR21 long before I got the AM, so I'm not sure what the temps were before...don't remember ever checking.
Needless to say, 77F is MUCH lower than the HR20's run. Any ideas why I'm seeing this "room temp" + 5deg temp reading?

edit: I DID add a self assembled eSata enclosure the other day, though that never made any difference on the HR20's...Thermaltake Silver River enclosure with Seagate 750g Sata drive.

I posted a similar message when I first got the AM21 and had it underneath the HR21, so nope ... no surprise to me. :)

If this was your internal drive, 77 is not right unless you have it powered off. My guess is that you would be having sensor troubles. Try rebooting and see if it changes. If not I would consider getting it replaced. The defective sensor was the first indication that my first HR21 was having trouble. Soon thereafter, the hard drive failed.

Since this is external, it may be correct as the sensor is in the drive., but even for external it seems to low.

Yes, your post was what prompted me to do an extensive comparison. :)

I will be leaving the AM21 on top of the HR21 as a result. IMO, cooler is usually better when it comes to electronics.

I am running at a balmy 116 degrees. AM is on top of the HR. Exposed to the room on top of a dresser for now.

I agree about it seeming too low (if there is such a thing in electronics). Unfortunately, I don't remember checking on the temps while I was using the internal drive. The combo is never off or in standby, and hasn't been since I got the HR. The last reboot was Sunday evening, when I connected the eSata. I think I'll wait for the next push (or CE) for the next one. After all, so far this combo has been pretty much flawless!

If you're trying to feel the temperature, make sure you're feeling the small part that actually has electronics. Most of the top will feel cool, just the back middle will feel warm.

The odd thing is the instructions state the AM21 can go under or over the HR21, so I'm sure DIRECTV's engineers did studies. If they also determined the unit ran slightly hotter with the AM21 under the HR21, they probably considered the heat gain negligible. However, like you and others, I believe cooler is better, so maybe DIRECTV should just recommend only putting the AM21 on top?

Mine runs around 120 with the AM21 on top. It is on a shelf that is open all around and has about 2 inches of space above it.

Mine sits in the open on top of the dresser in my bedroom and has been running between 115 and 120 with the AM21 on top, but that's the point at which the fan kicks in - so maybe the fan runs a bit more, but I don't consider the "heat" factor to be that great.

Mine runs about 115 with or without the AM21 on top. It is in the closed VCR compartment of an old TV stand.

What happens to the temperature reading if you temporarily go back to the internal drive for an hour or so. I thought they use the temp sensor in the hard drive.

I suppose I could check that tonight, since you're goading me into it, Bob!;)

Since tonight's push, I checked the temp after the restart and it's still reporting
77F for the temp. Still on the eSata drive. I'll check the temps on the internal later tonight.

Mine's at 113, but I'm not as anal as some here so I don't have any previous stats. :p
