Looks like mine did. Anyone else with this issue?

No but I have had several optical cables go bad. They are very fragile. I'm glad I can get them cheap from Monoprice. When you open the little optical door on the back of your HR20 can you see a red light? If yes it is OK and if not you have a problem.

I've never seen one reported case here of a dead optical audio output since the HR20 was released last September.

It's definatly dead. But I use a HDMI out. So I ran Optical OUT from the TV to the reciver and now I have sound. Will this be the same 5.1 sound if I was running it form the HR20 direct to the AV reciever?

    I have Panny Plasma.

That depends on what your TV does with the Dolby Digital info. It's your TV that's providing the optical signal to your Receiver now. If it were me, I would replace the HR20.
