Pause running full-on commercials now.

The screen-saver style ads are bad enough during a 'pause.' Yesterday, full 30 second ads started running WITH SOUND. What is DirecTVs problem? Pause is for PAUSING...not to run ads with audio that interrupt what I paused the TV for. This is getting utterly ridiculous. At least give us a setting to turn off this crap.

I have been borderline keep/cancel for a few months now. This is the sort of unacceptable crap that will push me into the cancel side. There are just WAY too many other options at better prices now than DirecTV. I have high-speed internet without caps so I have many options. I think I will begin exploring them now. I was hoping that getting AT&T off their backs might help, but not so far.

Welcome to the world of advertising. TPG owns 30% of DIRECTV with operational control. AT&T owns 70% of DIRECTV. Given that AT&T still has input involving DIRECTV.

I haven't encountered this, but, the reason we pause a show is to take a phone call, have a conversation and so forth, so an ad with sound is unacceptable, I agree. That said, is there anything we can do about it? I'm sure that every other service, streaming or otherwise will go to this model. Heck, we have started to PAY for content WITH ads. I guess they've determined that, after about 10-15 years of customers "rebelling" against ads, that we are now accepting them again.

There are broadband router solutions (site blocking) that can effectively block the servers that deliver the ads.

So these are internet driven? Where would I block them?

Yes, I've never connected the internet to the HR54, I've never seen a pause ad of any kind. Of course in the future Directv could gain the ability to send them over the sat airwaves, some people here have written that they already have that option, but for now, it either does not exist or they are choosing not to send them.

There were other reports that a Pi-Hole might be able to block them. If your audio integration allowed this, you could get a special remote that could mute your audio every time the pause button was pressed, unmute when hitting play.

Not to mention all of the current D* employees are former ATT employees. It’s all the same management running the show as it was before. People have got to stop thinking that some magic complete turnover of management and employees happened the day the company was spun off.

Too bad Linksys refused to fix the bug I reported on my 2 very expensive routers :(. That's why when I upgrade to Wifi6e, it sure as hell won't be a Linksys router.

I run my main AC router in my office, and then use a 2nd one at the TV running in bridge mode so I can use the 160mhz backhaul channel as well as AC (since all the devices are only N, but have gig wired ports). At least that was the idea. The 160mhz backhaul channel blocks my iPhone from connecting to the 5ghz network and while I'd theoretically be able to block the pause ad dns's under parental controls, they don't work when a device is going through the bridge router .

I contacted Linksys about it, and got a won't fix response.

I could probably try openwrt instead, but don't want to brick my routers, at least until the wifi6e ones come down a bit lol.

And of course last night, the ads are back. Still haven't encountered the ad with sound, on to plan B if that happens.

The still ads are back, but I haven't seen any video ads yet. The ads flash and change every 30 seconds. Annoying.

Does anyone at DirecTV care? What's plan B?

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking here.

DIRECTV sees this as an opportunity to gather additional revenue so from their perspective, I'm guessing that it is working as designed.

Those aren't paid ads, they are just promoting PSAs and various TV shows. It's more of an annoyance. Maybe flash a new ad every 2 minutes, not 30 seconds.

"My" plan B, is to write a macro for my remote if "sound" ads occur, that will pause and mute when I hit the pause button and play and unmute when I hit the play button. I use a Harmony remote and these types of things can be done with it.

If one ad in nudges someone to upgrade their subscription, it did what it was intended to do.

I'm not sure what the fascination is with what's going on during a pause (except for the audio -- that's not cool).

Answered several times over. Pause means pause, not show me a commercial.

DIRECTV is headed in the wrong direction. First by showing screen saver ads (instead of a paused screen) then showing moving ads (instead of a paused screen) and now showing ads with audio (instead of a paused screen). What's next? Pausing the video every 15 minutes to show an insert ad? (Damn, I just gave them their next idea.) And if you say no I'll refer you to the previous threads where people blew off the screen saver ads and said DIRECTV would never show video then blew off the silent video ads and said DIRECTV would never show video with audio. They like to double down.

Too bad DIRECTV is becoming known for being annoying as well as being expensive. :D
