Those commercials are typically scams. They tell you to stop paying the bills and instead send the money to them. The hope is that after getting behind several months, the companies owed money would be so desperate to get something that they'd settle for up to 50%. But the "debt reducer" takes most of the money that was being sent to them in service fees so you're not really ahead at all. For the OP, if you want any chance of DirecTV being willing to provide service to you in the future, you need to pay the bill, in full, ASAP. If you don't, they either will not be willing to provide service to you or will want a very large deposit to do so. If you settle for less, you can kiss future DirecTV service good bye.
