The last two days when I have turned on one of my HR24 there has been picture but no sound. I have switched to a different HDMI cable, tried a different input, tried both live and recorded programs with no sound. The only way to get sound was to do a reset. I have not called DirecTV yet to see what they think is wrong with it yet. I just wanted to know what you think might be wrong with it. Thanks in advance.

I've had this happen a couple times myself. All I did was went into settings, turned off Dolby Digital then the sound came back on. Then I turn DD back on. So far, this has only happened after a software update.

It did do a software update the other day. I will give it a try.

This worked for me too. Why one should have to do these kind of things is beyond me.

It appears to have worked. Thank you.

Is or was the problem with the HR24 a 500 model?

I found turning the HD DVR off and then on, returned the sound.

Turning it on and off did not fix it. It is a HR24/500.

    Try resetting your receiver.

That's why I asked if it was a 500. Have experienced this myself and a few other postings with same issue on 500's. I found it occurs on my LG TV but not my Sharp TV.

My workaround is to just cycle the TV off/on leaving the HR24 on while doing that returns audio.

This has been happening to me since the last software update on at least two HR24-500s connected through HDMI. My solution was to turn off the new Power Save feature. It's apparently broken.

Turning off the Dolby Digital did fix the problem.

Did you turn it on again?

HR24-500 and turn DD off then on again.

Other than manufacturer, I thought the HR24-100 and 500 were the same. Is there other differences?

In my case, I can turn the HR24 off and on and the audio is restored. Alternatively, cycling DD settings will restore the audio. There is another thread that discusses this problem in detail. I had the audio dropout problem prior to the HD-UI update. It has manifested itself across HD DVR models: HR22 and HR24.

HR24-500 has a different hardware chipset, and outputs RGB video rather than YPrPb used by other HR24's.

I have 2 HR24-500's. That's why I can't use HDMI cables and use component instead.

I have an HR24-500. I am using both HDMI (to a TV) and component (to a HD video encoder on my computer) at the same time, with no issues.

My HR24-500 is set with Dolby Digital on and is connected to a Sony A/V receiver via HDMI cable. My neighbor has a HR24-500 that is set with Dolby Digital on and is connected to a Onkyo A/V receiver. Neither of us have ever experienced a loss of audio issue. Given this and what others have posted eliminates the issue being inherent with the HR24-500 model.
