i currently have basic cable with comcast to keep the price of my internet down (don't ask, long story)...

i've also been reading that if i buy an hdtv with an internal qam tuner, i'll be able to plug the cable directly in and get any hdtv channels that are not encrypted - my question is, can i do the same thing with the ota tuner in the HR20?

The HR20's off-air tuner can only receive ATSC digital TV, not the QAM modulation used by most cable companies. I've heard that there are few cable companies that actually pass the off-air ATSC signal on their cable systems, but those are quite rare.
