It appears to vary by locality, and I'd not be surprised if the instructions are to empty the '34 bins first. Some areas have done this weeks ago. YMMV!!

You keep referring to the HR34 as if it were a slouch. It's not. The HR34 and HR44 share the same features with the HR44 adding a External Power Supply, Internal Wi-Fi, RF compatibility with the RC71 remote, Optical Audio Out, and a slightly faster processor. The speed variances between the HR34 and HR44 are listed in the "DBSTalk Second Look: HR44-500 Genie". The HR44 is slightly faster than the HR34 when using the Guide, Playlist, and Channel Changing. It's significantly faster than the HR34 when rebooting. But you already know all this. So, unless some or all of the HR44's added features are a must for someone or they intend to spend endless hours channel surfing, menu hopping, and rebooting the HR34 will meet their viewing needs.

I don't consider the HR34 to be a 'slouch'. I consider it to be a little slower than my HR24s and from my 2 minutes with an HR44 yesterday the HR44 very much noticeably faster than the HR34. Moving around the menus, lists and guides seemed to be on-par with Dish Network HD DVRs and that's a first for DirecTV!

What are the advantages of getting an HR34 over an HR44? Exactly. They cost the same, come with the same 2 year agreement why wouldn't someone adding a Genie prefer the HR44?

If I had and enjoyed an HR34 I certainly wouldn't pay to upgrade to an HR44 but if you're just now moving to a Genie it only makes sense to get the HR44.

You must be one of those people who spend a lot of time channel surfing, menu hopping, and rebooting to keep bringing up the "slight" difference in speed between the HR34 and HR44. We basically use a HD DVR for viewing and recording. Given that the HR34 and HR44 are the same. Again, unless some or all of the HR44's added features are a must for someone there is no reason to prefer a HR44 over a HR34.

I don't consider the speed difference "slight" and the HR34 has no plus side to it unless you already have one. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

Per DBSTalk Second Look: HR44-500 Genie speed differences between HR34 and HR44......Guide: 1.2 seconds......Playlist: 1.6 seconds......Channel Changing: 0.8 second. So, unless you're a android where nanoseconds seem like a eternity those look like slight differences to me.

Just moving around the lists and guide is night and day HR34 vs HR44. All you have to do is pickup the remote hit guide, down arrow 3 times and right arrow 4 times click record twice to set a series recording. Do that on an HR34 and do it again on an HR44. Unless you're in the habit of using the remote very s l o w l y you'll see the difference is much more than 'Slight'. But again We'll have to agree to disagree. I'm not going to convince you of anything and you're not going convince me that the difference is 'Slight'.

As always, numbers mean everything, and subjective takes mean little.

The definitive subjective view is that the HR44 is a tad faster than the HR34........

And why again would someone just getting started with a Genie 'prefer' the HR34? Simple - they wouldn't.

Some would indeed—and have— in those cases where you can get the '34 now, but would have to wait an indeterminate length of time to get the '44.

Be honest Mike. Are you or anyone else going to enjoy watching a program, movie, or sporting event more on a HR44 because it's slightly faster than a HR34? :sure:

Good point. If you can't wait and your local installers don't have HR44s then the HR34 is the best you can get. Otherwise no reason to go with the HR34.

A movie? Probably not. Anything that has commercials to skip through or sports you want to use instant replay? Most definitely. Setting up recordings, selecting something to watch? Again, most definitely!
